Honda Civic Hybrid's Innovative System Secures Wards 10 Best Engines Award

The Honda two-motor hybrid system in the 2025 Honda Civic Sedan and Hatchback has been honoured with a "Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems" award. This recognition marks the second consecutive year that a Honda hybrid-electric powertrain has received this accolade.

The new fourth-generation Honda two-motor hybrid-electric power unit is assembled by associates at the Honda Transmission Plant in Ohio. It is paired with a newly designed 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, produced at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio. All major components of the engine have been redesigned and improved, including the block, which now features stronger main bearing caps, cylinder head, crank, connecting rods and camshafts.

For the first time, these components are manufactured at the Anna Engine Plant, enhancing production efficiencies and increasing capacity. More information about the manufacture of the Honda two-motor hybrid system and 2.0-litre engine is available here.

The refreshed 2025 Honda Civic offers more style, advanced technology, and increased power with its available two-motor hybrid powertrain. Positioned at the top of the lineup, the new Civic hybrid combines the fun-to-drive spirit of Civic with the award-winning Honda two-motor hybrid system featuring two large and powerful electric motors.

The 2025 Civic is available in four trim levels: LX (sedan only), Sport, Sport Hybrid, and Sport Touring Hybrid. With a combined 200 horsepower and an impressive 232 lb.-ft. of torque1, these trims are the most powerful non-Type R Civics ever. They offer quick acceleration while achieving outstanding EPA fuel economy ratings—including a 50-mpg city rating for Civic Sedan Sport and Sport Touring hybrids2.

Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems Award

Since 1995, the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems award has recognised powertrain teams for their ability to deliver more power, torque, and efficiency. Winners are evaluated based on horsepower, torque, NVH management, observed fuel economy, and new technology onboard.

The multiple levels of regenerative-braking deceleration available through selector paddles on the steering wheel provide a wide range of control during deceleration. To further enhance driving dynamics and comfort, unique spring and damper tuning have been applied to Civic hybrids along with specifically-developed tyres.

Honda's Electrification Strategy

A key step in Honda's electrification strategy is maximising efficiency without compromising performance or space. Variants of this hybrid system are also available in the Honda Accord and CR-V models. In 2023, over half of Accord and CR-V sales were from these hybrid variants.

The Honda CR-V was America's best-selling hybrid vehicle in 2023 while the Accord hybrid sedan was the country's best-selling hybrid car. The new Civic hybrids also feature Active Noise Control on all models and wheel resonators on Sport Touring for enhanced cabin quietness.
