Maruti Swift Dominates May 2024 Hatchback Sales In India
Besides the Maruti Swift, which received a major upgrade last month, none of the other hatchbacks registered a positive YoY growth. Hatchback sales have dwindled over the past few years with the advent of more SUVs in the market and shift in consumer sentiment. Today, there are fewer hatchbacks available in the market and only a few generate sizable monthly sales volumes.

Maruti Suzuki Swift (19,393 units)
Maruti Suzuki launched the fourth-gen Swift in India last month, featuring updates over the outgoing model. The hatchback now has a more efficient, less powerful three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine replacing the older K12 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol mill. This new model helped Swift regain the top spot, becoming the highest-selling PV in the country.

The Indo-Japanese carmaker sold 19,393 units of Swift to dealerships across the country, resulting in a 12% YoY growth. Swift was also the only model among the top 5 hatchbacks to register a positive YoY growth.
Maruti Wagon R (14,492 units)
Maruti Wagon R became the second best-selling hatchback in May with 14,492 units sold. The tallboy hatch registered a negative YoY growth of 11%. Wagon R is priced between Rs 5.54 lakh and Rs 7.38 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Baleno (12,842 units)
Another strong seller for Maruti, the Baleno recorded monthly sales of 12,842 units in May, leading to a decline of 31% YoY. The premium hatchback is priced between Rs 6.66 lakh and Rs 9.88 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hyundai i20 rival is available in four variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha.
Maruti Alto (7,675 units)
Maruti Alto is the most affordable car in India currently, with prices starting from Rs 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom). The company sold 7,675 units of the micro hatch in May, resulting in a decline of 13% YoY.

Tata Tiago (5,927 units)
Tata Motors sold only 5,927 units of Tiago in May 2024, a 27% decline from May last year. Tiago serves as the entry-level model for Tata Motors, priced between Rs 5.65 lakh and Rs 8.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Tiago is available in petrol, CNG, and fully-electric powertrains.
DriveSpark Thinks
The demand for hatchback cars in India is decreasing as more people prefer SUVs and have different preferences now. Maruti Suzuki is the top player with the new Swift as the top-selling model, but other popular models like Wagon R, Baleno, and Alto are experiencing a decrease in sales year over year. Tata Tiago is also facing challenges with a notable drop in sales. This indicates a smaller hatchback market with only a few top-selling brands remaining in the competition.
