Goodwood Revival To Celebrate D-Day's 80th Anniversary With Grand Military Parade

Goodwood Revival will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings with a special on-track parade. The event, scheduled from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 September, will feature over 100 military machines that played crucial roles during the Second World War. These vehicles will be showcased both on track and at Lavant Infield, forming the largest gathering of military vehicles at Goodwood.

The parade will include an impressive array of military machines such as Jeeps, Tanks, Half-Tracks, DUKWs (GMC type nomenclature), motorbikes, aircraft, and boats. Leading this parade is Field Marshal Montgomery’s Rolls-Royce Wraith Staff Car, recently restored by Richard Hammond to its original 1940s condition. This unique vehicle was the first civilian car to disembark on Normandy beaches and was used by Montgomery throughout his European campaigns.

Among the notable vehicles joining the display are the M36 Jackson, Valentine Amphibious Tank, Sherman Tank, M4 High-Speed Tractor, and M8 Greyhound. A focal point will be the 63-foot MASB 27 anti-submarine boat, which served in air-sea rescue duties during D-Day and helped transport troops and armoured machinery from ship to shore.

The aerial contingent will feature Supermarine Spitfires, Auster Aircrafts, a Hawker Glider, and two Douglas C-47 Skytrains that dropped paratroopers into Normandy during the offensive. These planes will be displayed at the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation exhibition throughout the weekend. Additionally, Spitfires will participate in air displays each morning at 8 am and early evening on Saturday.

R.A.F Westhampnett played a crucial role during D-Day as a forward airfield for fighter aircraft supporting allied landings in June 1944. Goodwood House was converted into a hospital at the outbreak of World War II. Earlier commemorative events included lighting a beacon by The Duke of Richmond on St Roche’s Hill (The Trundle) on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 June.

The Duke of Richmond expressed pride in marking this significant anniversary with Goodwood's largest parade to date. He stated: "I am incredibly proud that the Goodwood Revival is marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings with our largest parade to date. As R.A.F Westhampnett, the Motor Circuit served as a base for operations during this time, and we are honoured to be welcoming veterans as part of the parade, recognising their vital contribution during the Second World War."

Event Details and Ticket Information

The D-Day parade will take place on Sunday alongside a full race schedule using sustainable fuels. The confirmed list of participating military machines will be available in the event’s Entry List announced soon. Tickets for Friday and Saturday are sold out; limited Sunday tickets remain available at goodwood.com.
