Goodwood Revival To Showcase Iconic Aircraft At Freddie March Spirit Of Aviation 2024
The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation, presented by Bonhams|Cars, will return to the Goodwood Revival in 2024. This event showcases a stunning collection of pre-1966 aircraft, honouring Freddie March, the 9th Duke of Richmond. The event is scheduled from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 September, with limited tickets available for Friday and Sunday at goodwood.com.
This year’s event will feature an impressive array of historic aircraft. Among them are several Supermarine Spitfires, including models from 1943 and 1944 that played crucial roles during World War II. Other notable aircraft include the Douglas C-47, Grumman Wildcat FM2, Hawker Hurricane, Swordfish Mk1, and Westland Lysander 111A.
The competition will be judged by a distinguished panel from the aviation industry. Katherine Moloney, founder of Elevate(her) and director of Transair Flight Equipment, joins the panel. She is also a Department for Transport ambassador and has nearly 400,000 followers on TikTok as an aviation content creator.
Mack Rutherford will also make his debut as a judge. He holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to fly solo around the world at just 16 years old. His journey began in March 2022 and concluded five months later in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Squadron Leader Alan Jones returns as a seasoned judge. He is the Director of the Solent Sky Museum in Southampton and has been instrumental in preserving over twenty airframes from aviation's golden age. The Solent area was home to more than 26 aircraft manufacturers, including the renowned Supermarine Spitfire.
Aviation historian Paul Beaver also joins the panel. He specialises in aircraft from the 1930s and 1940s and founded Monty’s Messenger Ltd., operating a Miles Messenger marked as Field Marshal Montgomery’s aeroplane during D-Day.
Additional Judges
Steve Parrish, former British Motorcycle Champion and regular competitor at Goodwood, will join this year’s judging panel. After being introduced to helicopters while travelling to races with Barry Sheene, Parrish pursued his pilot’s licence and has since owned several light aircraft. He also serves as a commentator for the Red Bull Air Race series on Channel 4.
The event will open each morning at 8am with an early morning flypast featuring spectacular aeroplanes like a Spitfire, P47 Thunderbolt, and P51 Mustang. Gates open to the public at 0830hrs and at 0730hrs for members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club.
