GM Secures Major Solar Power Agreement For Assembly Plants Sustainability
General Motors (GM) has entered into a significant 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy. This deal will support three GM assembly plants by adding renewable energy directly to the grid. The Newport Solar project in Newport, Arkansas, will provide electricity for GM’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, and the Wentzville Assembly site in Missouri.
The Newport project boasts a capacity of 180 megawatts, enough to power 30,000 homes annually. NorthStar Clean Energy is a unit of CMS Energy. This agreement marks GM’s largest power purchase deal to date and is a crucial step towards the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

In 2022, GM announced it had secured the necessary energy sourcing agreements to power all its U.S. sites with renewable electricity by the end of 2025. "By expanding our renewable electricity portfolio, we are taking a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our broader sustainability goals," says Rob Threlkeld, GM director of global energy strategy. "This facility not only supports our renewable electricity strategy, but also demonstrates our dedication to a sustainable future for all."
GM now has sourcing agreements from 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states. This makes GM the automotive industry’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity. The company’s commitment to sustainability is evident through these efforts.
General Motors (NYSE:GM) is dedicated to advancing an all-electric future that is inclusive and accessible. Central to this strategy is the Ultium battery platform, which will power everything from mass-market vehicles to high-performance cars. GM and its subsidiaries sell vehicles under brands like Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Baojun, and Wuling.
