GM And LG Energy Solution Expand Partnership For Advanced Battery Technology Development
General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution are expanding their 14-year collaboration to include prismatic cell technology. This development aims to power future GM electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a strategy to diversify the supply chain with various chemistries and formats. The partnership will enhance GM's EV offerings by leveraging advanced battery technologies.
Prismatic cells, known for their flat, rectangular shape, offer efficient space usage within battery modules. This design can lower EV weight and cost while simplifying manufacturing by reducing module numbers and mechanical parts. LG Energy Solution brings expertise in prismatic cell production and holds numerous patents in battery design and packaging technologies.
GM plans to continue using its Ultium Cells plants in Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, which currently produce pouch battery cells. These facilities will help meet the rising demand for GM's electric vehicles. The Ultium Cells initiative has already created thousands of jobs in these locations.
GM is adopting a technology-neutral approach to battery cells, aiming to optimise range, performance, and charging speed for an enhanced EV driving experience. "Together with LG Energy Solution, we’ve built Ultium Cells into one of the largest battery cell manufacturers in North America," said Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery cell and pack.
The batteries produced at these plants power GM's latest EV models like the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac LYRIQ, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV. This expansion reflects GM's commitment to improving battery technology for better performance and safety while reducing costs.
Strengthening Partnerships
"LG Energy Solution is proud to be expanding its relationship with one of its strongest partners," stated Wonjoon Suh, executive vice president at LG Energy Solution. "Together with GM, we’ve already made tremendous progress." The partnership aims to drive optimal chemistry and battery combinations for continued growth in the EV market.
General Motors is committed to shaping the future of transportation by utilising advanced technology to create safer and more efficient vehicles. Their brands—Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC—offer a wide range of innovative gasoline-powered vehicles alongside an extensive lineup of electric vehicles as they transition towards an all-electric future.
The collaboration between GM and LG Energy Solution highlights their shared vision for advancing electric vehicle technology. By focusing on developing diverse battery chemistries and form factors, they aim to enhance the overall performance of electric vehicles while ensuring safety and cost-effectiveness.
