GM Defense Introduces Next Gen Tactical Vehicle Prototype At AUSA 2024 For Enhanced Military Operations
GM Defense, a branch of General Motors, is set to introduce its latest "Next Gen" tactical vehicle prototype at the AUSA 2024 event. This annual meeting and exposition by the Association of the U.S. Army will occur from October 14 to 16, 2024. The unveiling will take place at Booth #7809, Hall D, within the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
The Next Gen vehicle is built on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 truck platform. It features GM's 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine paired with a 12-module battery pack. This setup includes drive motors for both front and rear axles, enabling Silent Drive and Silent Watch technologies. These features make the vehicle less detectable in high-threat areas by allowing stealthy movement.
This new vehicle offers several tactical advantages such as low acoustic and thermal signatures through Silent Drive and Silent Watch. It also provides exportable power for charging mission systems and boasts a significant range for extended missions. Designed to be autonomy-ready, it supports both manned and unmanned operations and can be equipped with add-on armor.
Safety is a priority with active and passive features like roll-over protection, anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, four- and five-point seat belt harnesses, and 360-degree camera capabilities. "Our Next Gen vehicle is a game-changing mobility solution that delivers tactically significant capabilities by integrating GM’s proven commercial technologies," stated Steve duMont, president of GM Defense.
The Next Gen vehicle also brings sustainment benefits by reducing fuel demand and utilizing existing JP8 fuel infrastructure. Its design lowers maintenance needs due to fewer parts in the propulsion system, thus minimizing logistics for fuel, batteries, and vehicle components.
John 'JD' Johnson, vice president of GM Defense’s Government Solutions and Strategy Division, emphasized the hands-on experience: "Next Gen’s ‘wow’ factor is right behind the wheel." He encouraged customers to test drive it to fully appreciate its capabilities.
