GM China Ushers In New Era With Steve Hill As President Following Julian Blissett's Retirement
SHANGHAI – In a significant leadership transition, General Motors (GM) has announced a change at the top of its China operations. Steve Hill, currently serving as vice president of global commercial operations, is set to take over as GM senior vice president and president of GM China, starting June 1. This move comes as Julian Blissett, the current executive vice president and president of GM China, opts for retirement after a notable tenure with the company.
Blissett's retirement marks the end of an era for GM China, where he has been instrumental in steering the company through periods of substantial growth and transformation. His leadership was particularly pivotal during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring GM's sustained success and expansion in one of its most crucial markets. Rory Harvey, GM executive vice president and president, Global Markets, praised Blissett's contributions, highlighting the solid foundation he has laid for future growth in China.
The appointment of Steve Hill as Blissett's successor is a strategic move by GM to capitalize on the accelerating shift towards vehicle electrification and new technology deployment in the Chinese market. Hill brings to the table a wealth of experience in commercial strategy and customer relations, having held several key positions within GM, including vice president of U.S. Sales, Service and Marketing, and global vice president of Customer Care and Aftersales.
Blissett's journey with GM began in 1996 in Europe within the engineering division. His career trajectory saw him taking on leadership roles across Manufacturing and New Business Development teams before his promotion to executive vice president of SAIC General Motors (SAIC-GM) in 2014. In 2019, he was appointed senior vice president, International Operations, where he played a crucial role in optimizing GM’s international business performance. Blissett took the helm of GM China in 2020, leading the company through a period marked by intense competition and significant industry shifts.
Expressing his sentiments on his retirement, Blissett shared his pride in contributing to GM's global and Chinese market successes. He looks forward to returning to England to spend more time with his family. On the other hand, Hill expressed enthusiasm about his new role, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening partnerships, driving sales growth, and enhancing customer experiences in China.
In his forthcoming role, Hill will be part of GM’s Senior Leadership Team and will be based in Shanghai, reporting directly to Rory Harvey. This leadership transition underscores GM's focus on maintaining its competitive edge in China by embracing electrification and innovative technologies to meet evolving market demands.
