GM Arlington Hits Milestone With 70th Anniversary And 13 Millionth Cadillac Escalade-V
This week, the Arlington Assembly team is celebrating two significant milestones: the 70th anniversary of the plant and the assembly of its 13 millionth vehicle. The milestone vehicle is a 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V, featuring a 682-horsepower supercharged V8 engine. Arlington Assembly exclusively assembles GM’s full-size gas and diesel-powered SUVs, which have led the segment for nearly five decades.
Since its inception in January 1954, Arlington Assembly has produced over 13 million vehicles. The plant has a rich history of manufacturing iconic models like the Pontiac Chieftain, Chevrolet Bel Air, Pontiac GTO, Cadillac Brougham, and Buick Regal. In 1997, it transitioned to truck production, and in 2012, a stamping facility was added to produce major exterior and interior panels.
The plant employs over 5,400 people and operates three shifts six days a week to meet demand. It spans six million square feet on a 250-acre site and features over 20 miles of conveyors. In March 2023, it set a monthly production record by assembling over 34,000 vehicles.
General Motors (GM) has invested $1.9 billion in Arlington Assembly since 2014. A modernized body shop with 1,450 robotic welders was introduced in 2020. GM employs more than 9,000 people in Texas and generated nearly $1.2 billion in taxable wages in 2023. Additionally, GM collaborates with 550 suppliers and has over 300 dealers across Texas.
"This plant is an integral part of Arlington’s history and its economy," said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross. "The long-standing partnership between the City of Arlington and General Motors is a testament that we are truly better together."
Employee Recognition
To celebrate these milestones, employees will have opportunities to take photos with the milestone vehicle, receive commemorative shirts and challenge coins, and enjoy refreshments during the celebration. John Urbanic, plant executive director, expressed gratitude: "Milestones like these are met only through the dedication, determination and skill of our employees."
The plant's workforce produces over 1,350 vehicles daily and exports them to more than 30 countries worldwide. The assembly line operates around the clock to keep up with consumer demand.
Future Prospects
The Arlington Assembly plant continues to be a cornerstone of GM's operations. With ongoing investments and technological advancements, it remains poised to meet future demands while maintaining its legacy of producing world-class vehicles.
The collaboration between GM and Arlington underscores their commitment to economic growth and innovation in automotive manufacturing.
