Glohh Launches First-Ever LED Taillights For Land Rover Defender
Glohh has introduced the GL-2 and GL-2x, the world's first LED combination taillights for the Land Rover Defender, receiving global recognition. The GL-2 brings new features such as dual impact lighting, a fully integrated LED unit, and a design tested in Icelandic winter conditions. This modern homage to the Defender’s heritage was created due to global demand for contemporary light solutions.
On Tuesday, June 18th, in England, UK, Glohh unveiled the GL-2, a bespoke taillight for the Land Rover Defender L316 (1990 – 2016). Available in two styles, GL-2 features a deep red lens for those who prefer the original Defender look, while GL-2x offers a darkened lens for a minimalist appearance. Both versions enhance the Defender’s character without compromising its legacy.
"The Defender market is dynamic, with new products for customisation appearing regularly. Our analysis found over 73% of Defenders are modified internationally," said Dr. Faheem Rafiq, Lead Engineer at Glohh. "Working on the GL-2 was both a challenge and an opportunity; every surface came under scrutiny to deliver a design aging as timelessly as the vehicle itself."
With over 2 million Series/Defenders produced since 1948 and over 400,000 still in use today, enthusiasts worldwide seek ways to integrate modern technology into the Defender. Glohh leveraged its experience in creating innovative lighting solutions for Range Rover to introduce new features that provide an edge over various terrains.
The GL-2 includes dual light impact for increased visibility, a fully integrated LED unit with all core features, and a utilitarian yet modern design. The taillight maintains a classic three-light configuration while incorporating four symmetrical scintillators in a striated structure. Inspired by nature's geometry, its concave lens creates a visually deep design guiding light along fluid lines.
Dynamic Start-up Display
The GL-2 introduces Glohh's Dynamic Start-up Display (DSD) to the Land Rover Defender. This feature activates on ignition, gradually illuminating inner edge scintillators from crescent to semicircle until revealing the final light identity. This process checks the 24 individual light diodes while creating a powerful first impression.
Safety and Materials
The GL-2 prioritises safety with dual-impact lighting for enhanced visibility across indicators, reverse lights, fog lights, and brake lights. The lamps use independent left and right 5,000 Kelvin reverse lights and brighter fog lights with double wattage and wider angle coverage. These advancements ensure optimal performance in any terrain.
The taillight underwent rigorous testing in Iceland's extreme climates to ensure durability. Designed with toughened Polymethyl Methacrylate and a corrugated structure, it enhances structural integrity against impacts and vibrations. Water resistance exceeds IP67 requirements, ensuring reliability in off-road conditions.
Market Reception
"The Defender's impact continues to shape the automotive industry," says Dr. Faheem Rafiq. "This desire has resulted in a successful worldwide launch despite economic challenges, with hundreds shipped to over 90 countries." The acclaim for the GL-2 has led to demand for a front lighting option to complement its rear counterpart.
Glohh plans to unveil matching turn signal and side light options soon. Additionally, they are exploring a NAS GL-2 option for the North American market. The taillight is a direct plug-and-play replacement for the Land Rover Defender L316 (1990 – 2016), meeting international ECE and DOT requirements.
Pricing and Availability
The GL-2 is priced at £489.00, while the GL-2x is priced at £539.00. Both taillights are available worldwide through Glohh’s website and authorised dealers.
