Genesis Canada Celebrates Excellence In Diversity, Equity And Inclusion Journalism At AJAC Awards
The 41st Annual Automobile Journalism Awards, hosted by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), recognised outstanding contributions in diversity, equity, and inclusion journalism. Jodi Lai, Editor-in-Chief at AutoTrader, won for her article on the Honour House Society. Perry Lefko was the runner-up with his piece featuring Ford Canada's President Beverly Goodman.
Genesis Motors Canada acknowledged these achievements by donating $200 to the Canadian Center for Diversity and Inclusion in Jodi Lai's name and $100 in Perry Lefko's name. The awards aim to highlight journalism that gives voice to underrepresented groups, including those facing physical or mental challenges, visible minorities, indigenous people, or those with diverse sexual identities.
The award-winning article by Jodi Lai was published on AutoTrader in February 2024. It focused on the Honour House Society and its president, Allan De Genova. The society offers free support and accommodation to Canadian Armed Forces personnel, veterans, emergency service workers, and first responders dealing with PTSD or physical injuries. The jurors praised the story for its compelling narrative and effective portrayal of Honour House Society's vital work.
Perry Lefko's article appeared in Canadian Auto Dealer in September 2023. It covered career advice from Beverly Goodman during the Empowering Auto Conference. This event highlighted strategies for success within the automotive industry.
The winners were chosen by a panel of three independent jurors: Marci Gray, Sema Burney, and Sandeep Nair. These experts have extensive knowledge in diversity-related topics. They reviewed submissions without knowing the authors' identities to ensure impartiality.
Frédéric Mercier from Genesis Canada presented trophies to both Jodi Lai and Perry Lefko for their exceptional contributions to diversity journalism.
