Genesis And The Met Unite For The Genesis Facade Commission Series
Genesis has launched Genesis Art Initiatives to celebrate art as a meaningful experience, collaborating with leading institutions and cultural visionaries. This initiative begins with a five-year partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, supporting its annual Facade Commission series.
The Genesis Facade Commission invites an artist each year to create new works for The Met’s Fifth Avenue facade niches. The 2024 commission will feature artist Lee Bul's work from September 12, 2024, to May 27, 2025. Additionally, Genesis Art Initiatives will partner with Tate Modern for The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh, opening in May 2025.
Lee Bul, born in South Korea in 1964, will create four new sculptures for The Met's facade niches. Known for her use of industrial and artisanal materials like fabric, metal, and glass, Lee's work often combines classical and futuristic elements. This marks her first major U.S. project since her solo exhibition at the New Museum in New York in 2002.
Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, expressed excitement about the partnership with The Met. "As a long-time supporter of the arts, we are thrilled to embark on a new journey of Genesis Art Initiatives with The Metropolitan Museum of Art," he said. "With our aspiration and ambition for this impactful partnership, we hope to become part of The Met’s inspiring community and to amplify the voices of renowned cultural visionaries."
The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer Max Hollein also praised the collaboration. "The Met’s Fifth Avenue facade is a powerfully prominent and accessible platform for the display of art that now regularly features new sculptures by the most innovative artists working today," he said. "We are grateful to Genesis for their incredible generosity and support."

The inaugural exhibition under this new partnership is titled "The Genesis Facade Commission: Lee Bul, Long Tail Halo." It will be on view from September 12, 2024, to May 27, 2025. The 2025 Genesis Facade Commission will showcase new works by Jeffrey Gibson from the United States. Meanwhile, The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh at Tate Modern will run from May 1 to October 26, 2025. This exhibition will feature immersive fabric installations and life-size replicas of Suh's past homes.
