Gaurav Gill Battles For Top Spot At New Zealand's Otago Rally

India's motorsport icon Gaurav Gill is currently showcasing his exceptional skills at New Zealand's Otago Rally. On the first day, Gill clinched victory in three out of eight stages. Despite a setback in stage five where he lost 15 seconds, he is now trailing behind the leader, Jack Hawkeswood, by a slight margin of over 30 seconds. Robbie Stokes holds the second position, leading Gill by an 11-second gap.

Gill, a three-time Rally of Whangarei champion, is competing in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 car, previously steered by 2022 APRC champion and a 10-time winner of the Otago Rally, Haydon Paddon. With New Zealand's Jared Hudson as his co-driver, Gill is navigating the rally's diverse and challenging stages.

Reflecting on the competition, Gill said, "It has been a very unique experience; the super-fast stages are so distinct and varied from one another that I would describe them as extremely fast. I have never driven this fast before."

He emphasized the team's efforts to maintain rhythm through the more challenging parts of the rally, acknowledging the tough competition from more powerful cars. Despite these challenges, Gill remains optimistic about securing a podium finish.
