Racing Gamers Believe Video Games Improve Their Driving Abilities

Nearly half (48%) of British racing video game players believe their virtual driving experience makes them better drivers than non-gamers. A significant 65% of these gamers view racing video games as similar to real-life driving. This perception might be the source of their confidence on the road.

For many racing game enthusiasts, gaming isn't just a pastime; it's a way to enhance skills and build confidence that they believe translates to real-world driving. According to a poll by Hyundai, 52% of gamers report improved reaction times and safety, while 42% notice better overall road awareness. Additionally, 39% say their ability to spot potential hazards has improved through gaming.

The survey, which included 1,000 drivers who play racing video games, also revealed that half (50%) of those who played these games as children believe it helped them pass their driving test faster. Over 52% confirmed they passed on their first attempt. These findings suggest that skills developed in virtual environments can have tangible benefits in real-life scenarios.

Progressively immersive racing simulators and advancements in car design are blurring the lines between gaming and reality. Features like Hyundai’s N Active Sound + in the IONIQ 5 N offer realistic sounds, one derived from the gaming world. This feature enhances the driving experience by making electric vehicles feel more dynamic and responsive.

Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai & Genesis UK, stated, "With one-third of players acknowledging that racing games have influenced their choice of car model, it’s evident that both fun and functionality need to be at the forefront of design. The technology in the IONIQ 5 N is essential for creating an exhilarating driving experience, addressing what many have felt was previously missing from EVs."

Gamers' Perception vs Reality

Despite the similarities gamers find between virtual and real-life driving—such as steering (63%), control & cornering (49%), and gear shifts (47%)—only a quarter (26%) think the sound in racing games matches real-life driving. However, sound remains crucial for over three-quarters (78%) of gamers, with almost a third (30%) considering it the most important aspect of the driving experience.

Hyundai's research also highlighted that over three-quarters (77%) of people find more excitement in virtual racing than in real-life driving. This insight has driven Hyundai Motor UK to ensure that the thrill gamers enjoy remains a key feature in future electric vehicles, showcased in models like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.
