Formula E Achieves Top Position In Global Sustainability ESP Ranking For Third Consecutive Year
Formula E has once again topped the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) ranking, marking its third consecutive year as a leader in sustainability ESG. The all-electric championship achieved an impressive score of 85 out of 100, surpassing the sporting industry average of 51. This achievement highlights Formula E's commitment to sustainable excellence across Environmental, Social, and Governance categories.
Julia Pallé, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E, expressed her delight at being recognized as the top ESG sport globally for three years running. She stated, "Our dedication to ensuring everything is as sustainable as possible...is paying off." Pallé emphasized that their mission is ongoing and aims to inspire others in the sports community.
In a significant move towards sustainability, Formula E plans to cut Season 11 freight emissions by 25%. This initiative will save approximately 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide. Collaborating with DHL, Formula E will optimize air freight and shift a substantial portion to ocean freight. Key partners will reduce freight weight by over 80 tons by sourcing assets locally and using lighter alternatives.
Christian Hartmann, CEO of GSBS, praised Formula E's leadership in sustainability within the sports industry. He noted that under Julia Pallé's guidance, Formula E sets a benchmark in modern sustainability management. Hartmann highlighted the organization's ambition and rigorous execution as key factors in securing its top position in the GSBS Rating.
The GSBS assessment analyzed over 1,700 data points from 64 organizations across 11 countries. Formula E stood out with its high score compared to other sports organizations like Formula 1 (54/100) and FIFA (58/100). The study included various sports such as motorsport, soccer, tennis, and basketball.
Manuel Kohnstamm from Liberty Global commended Formula E for setting the gold standard for sustainability in sport. As a majority shareholder and early supporter, he expressed pride in Formula E's role in showcasing sustainability on a global stage. Kohnstamm emphasized that Formula E not only redefines motorsport but also sets an example for building a sustainable future.
Commitment to Sustainable Progress
Formula E's efforts extend beyond racing locations. The organization continually reduces its carbon footprint while promoting diversity within its structure. This commitment aligns with its Science Based Targets initiative to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to Season 5 levels.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is notable for being certified on a pathway to net zero carbon since its inception. Working with partners like DHL and TATA Communications, it optimizes freight logistics by reducing volume and weight transported via air freight.
Formula E's network includes teams, manufacturers, partners, broadcasters, and host cities united by a passion for the sport and belief in accelerating sustainable human progress. This collective effort aims to create a better future for people and the planet through electric vehicle innovation.
The organization's internal tech and logistics team collaborates with partners such as FIA and ABB to audit and repack freight efficiently. By utilizing sea freight for essential equipment transport outside Europe, they have reduced cargo plane usage from three planes to two.
This comprehensive approach demonstrates Formula E's dedication to minimizing environmental impact while maintaining high performance standards. The championship continues to lead by example in promoting sustainability within the sports industry worldwide.
