Winners Announced For Formula DRIFT PRO Championship Round 5 In St Louis

The Formula DRIFT PRO Championship Round 5 and Link ECU PROSPEC Championship Round 2 took place at the World Wide Technology Raceway on Thursday, July 18, 2024. Dmitriy Brutskiy secured first place in the PRO Seeding Bracket with his Never Settle E46 BMW, followed by Daniel Stuke and Mike Power, both driving Nissan S15s.

Significant course modifications were made to the track, including K-rail additions to Outside Zones 1 and 4. These changes aimed to prevent vehicles from damaging the infield. The weather varied throughout the event, with sunny conditions for the Link ECU PROSPEC Seeding Bracket and cooler temperatures under floodlights for the K&N PRO Seeding Bracket.

This year, solo qualifying runs have been replaced by competitive tandem runs. Lower-ranked drivers must qualify this way once top positions are determined by previous rounds. For the PRO Championship, New Jersey preset the first 24 positions, while the remaining 12 drivers competed for eight spots in positions 25-32.

The K&N Top 16 Seeding Bracket saw Brutskiy taking first place, with Stuke second and Power third. The full list of drivers who qualified through the Seeding Bracket is provided below. The top eight finishers advanced to the Top 32 competition heats, while others were eliminated.

In PROSPEC, the first 16 positions were preset. The remaining 30 drivers competed in a seeding bracket for one of the final 16 places in Top 32 competition. This bracket operates on a sudden death basis, where losers of each tandem run are eliminated.

Two drivers are competing in both championships: Dmitriy Brutskiy and Rudy Hansen. In St Louis, Brutskiy qualified for both but Hansen narrowly missed out on PRO. Brutskiy uses different cars tailored to each championship, while Hansen entered the same Team Hansen Supercharged Nissan S13 in both.

Event Challenges and Results

The start of the PRO Seeding Bracket was delayed due to wet paint markings in Outer Zone 4 causing spins. An appeal led judges to re-run two battles for fairness. In these re-runs, Brutskiy advanced to the Top 8 while Andy Hateley couldn't start due to a broken water pump.

Despite power steering issues, Derek Madison advanced to the Top 8 after initially losing to Hateley. Ben Hobson finally reached the FD PRO Top 32 competition heats this season after defeating Alec Robbins in the Seeding Bracket.
