Formula DRIFT PRO Championship Final Round 8 Results: Thorne Takes Top Spot In Irwindale
The Formula DRIFT PRO Final Round 8, known as the Type S Title Fight, took place at Irwindale Speedway. Robert Thorne emerged victorious in the K&N PRO Seeding Bracket after Forrest Wang couldn't start the final. The event saw several mechanical issues and a significant crash involving Vaughn Gittin Jr., who was driving the Monster Energy Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD.
Thorne's performance was notable as he eliminated both RTR drivers, including Ben Hobson. Hobson's exit marked the end of a challenging season for him. Gittin Jr. managed to finish fourth and will advance to the Top 32. The competition saw several drivers knocked out of the Top 16 Seeding Bracket, including Dmitriy Brutskiy, Ryan Litteral, Diego Higa, and Derek Madison.
The remaining seven drivers will compete in positions 25-32 based on their standings from Round 7. Aurimas Bakchis secured first place and a bye run for the next round. This could be advantageous in his pursuit of a first championship title if James Deane fails to start in the Top 32.
James Deane leads the championship standings with a 74-point advantage over Bakchis. To secure his fourth title, Deane needs only to demonstrate his car's capability against Daniel Stuke in the initial heat. However, during Friday practice, Deane encountered mechanical issues with his AutoZone Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD, raising concerns about his ability to start.
The Formula DRIFT series is renowned globally as a premier drifting championship.
