Ford Teams Up With TXU Energy For Free Home EV Charging Hours In Texas

Ford and TXU Energy have partnered to offer electric vehicle (EV) customers substantial savings on home charging through a unique energy management plan. The TXU Free EV Miles program provides Ford EV owners with credits on their TXU Energy bills for electricity used during specific hours, potentially covering the entire cost of at-home charging.

The TXU Free EV Miles program allows Ford EV customers to charge their vehicles at home for free, as over 80% of charging occurs at home. Customers will receive credits on their TXU Energy bills for all energy used for vehicle charging between 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. the next day, year-round. This initiative supports grid reliability and promotes clean energy usage by encouraging off-peak energy consumption.

Free Home EV Charging by Ford & TXU

Ford aims to educate Texans about the advantages of driving electric vehicles while incentivizing them to charge when grid demand is low. The program offers flexibility, allowing customers 18 hours daily to charge for free. Using the Preferred Charge Times feature in the FordPass app or in-vehicle touchscreen, drivers can schedule charging within TXU Energy’s free hours.

Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Escape Plugin Hybrid customers can benefit from bill credits regardless of their home charging hardware. Enrolling in the Free EV Miles energy plan also brings additional perks: a $100 welcome bonus from Ford and a $250 bonus from TXU Energy for staying enrolled for a year. Once verified, customers will start receiving automatic rebates for at-home charging costs during free hours.

In case customers need to charge outside the free hours, they will pay a simple fixed rate, identical to their home rate. This foundation allows Ford and TXU Energy to test customer interest in future retail energy offerings that further incentivize support for grid stability in Texas, which ranked third in electric vehicle sales nationwide in 2023.

Supporting Grid Resiliency

"Encouraging our electric vehicle customers to charge at off-peak hours through programs like Free EV Miles helps to save them money while supporting a more sustainable, resilient electrical grid," said Bill Crider, senior director of global charging and energy services at Ford Motor Company. He added that Ford's electric SUVs and trucks already have lower operating and maintenance costs compared to gas-powered vehicles, with additional financial perks from at-home charging.

The partnership aligns with TXU Energy’s broader strategy of educating customers on the benefits of owning an EV, removing barriers to making the switch, and increasing grid resiliency. "We are proud to support Ford’s Texas EV customers with flexible, free charging hours and significant cost savings," said Sam Sen, vice president of energy transition solutions for TXU Energy.

Enrollment for the Free EV Miles program is now open to interested Ford and current or future TXU Energy customers. For more information or to check eligibility, visit www.txu.com/freeevmilesford.

This collaboration between Ford and TXU Energy not only offers financial benefits but also promotes sustainable practices by encouraging off-peak energy use. It represents a step towards a more resilient electrical grid while making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and cost-effective for Texans.
