Ford In Talks To Resume Vehicle Manufacturing In Tamil Nadu

Ford Motor Company is considering a return to vehicle manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, India. This marks the second time this year that Ford has engaged in discussions with the Tamil Nadu government about resuming production. The talks focus on producing vehicles for export, signalling a potential comeback after Ford exited the Indian market three years ago.

Ford's Potential Comeback

In March 2024, Kay Hart, President of Ford Motor Company's International Markets Group, visited India. This visit hinted at the American brand's possible return to the country. The company is evaluating the launch of the new Everest model and developing an affordable electric vehicle (EV) platform made in India.

MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, recently met with several American companies, including those in the automotive sector. These meetings are part of a broader effort to attract more investments into Tamil Nadu, known for its automobile and auto component industries. On September 11, Stalin met with representatives from Ford Motor Company.

Engaging Discussions

Following his meeting with Ford officials, MK Stalin tweeted about their productive discussion. He stated, "Had a very engaging discussion with the team from Ford Motors! Explored the feasibility of renewing Ford's three-decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, to again make in Tamil Nadu for the world!" This tweet underscores the potential revival of Ford's long-standing relationship with the state.

Ford ceased domestic car production in India in 2021 due to struggling sales volumes and stopped export production by 2022. In 2023, Ford sold one of its two Indian plants to Tata Motors and closed its other plant in Chennai. Despite these closures, Ford continues to explore viable options for its remaining plant in Chennai.

The Chief Minister's efforts to draw investments highlight Tamil Nadu's strategic importance as an automotive hub. The state's established infrastructure and skilled workforce make it an attractive destination for global automakers like Ford.

Ford's renewed interest in manufacturing in Tamil Nadu could significantly impact the local economy. It may create job opportunities and boost related industries such as auto components and logistics.

The discussions between Ford and Tamil Nadu officials indicate a positive step towards revitalising the company's presence in India. If successful, this move could strengthen India's position as a key player in global automotive manufacturing.
