Ford BlueCruise 1.5 Enhances Hands-Free Driving With Automatic Lane Change Feature
Ford's BlueCruise technology now offers a hands-free lane change feature. This enhancement allows drivers to maintain their speed without manual intervention. The Automatic Lane Change, part of BlueCruise 1.5, was developed by Ford's Advanced Driver Assistance team. It aims to improve the hands-free driving experience on highways by allowing smoother navigation around slower vehicles.
Initially launched with the Mustang Mach-E, BlueCruise has evolved through various updates. Starting with version 1.0, it has seen improvements in performance and features over time. The latest version, BlueCruise 1.5, is set to debut on the 2025 Mustang Mach-E. This update promises enhanced hands-free driving capabilities in diverse conditions.
The Automatic Lane Change feature is designed to make highway driving more seamless. It avoids merging into lanes with faster traffic or those with off-ramps and unclear markings. This functionality increases the duration of uninterrupted hands-free driving, enhancing convenience for users.
BlueCruise can perform a lane change when a clear adjacent lane is detected. Before executing the maneuver, drivers receive visual and audio alerts about the impending change and its reason, such as overtaking slower traffic. The system will proceed unless the driver intervenes by using the turn signal or holding the steering wheel steady.
For those who prefer not to use this feature, it can be disabled in the Driver Assistance settings. This flexibility ensures that drivers can tailor their experience according to their comfort level while using BlueCruise.
User Engagement and Statistics
In the U.S., data shows that 77% of BlueCruise trips last under 20 minutes. However, for longer journeys exceeding an hour, like road trips, usage exceeds 50%. Whether for daily commutes or extended travel, BlueCruise aims to simplify highway driving.
Internal tests reveal that BlueCruise 1.5 automates up to 45% of lane changes on average drives. This automation contributes significantly to a smoother driving experience by reducing manual interventions required from drivers.
The introduction of these features reflects Ford's commitment to enhancing driver assistance technologies continually. Future updates will further expand BlueCruise availability across different models and years.
