Bentley Celebrates Final Hand-Built W12 Engine Production In Crewe
Bentley Motors has marked the end of an era by celebrating the production of its final hand-built W12 engine at its UK headquarters in Crewe. This milestone concludes a significant chapter in Bentley's history, as the last W12-powered Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur models leave the production line.
Over 100,000 W12 engines have been crafted since their debut in the original Continental GT in 2003. The decision to cease production aligns with Bentley's Beyond100 strategy, aiming to lead in sustainable luxury mobility. To commemorate this occasion, a special event was held at Bentley’s Heritage Garage in Crewe.
The W12 engine has been pivotal for Bentley, with each unit hand-built in Crewe. This meticulous process involves assembling 2,600 components over seven hours. The finished engine undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets Bentley’s high standards for power and reliability.
Andreas Lehe, Member of the Board for Manufacturing at Bentley Motors, stated: "The W12 has played such an important role in the history of Bentley that it was only right for us to celebrate the engine’s retirement with those linked to this powerplant."
The W12 engine is renowned for its compact design, being 24% shorter than a conventional V12. This made it ideal for the Continental GT's sleek lines. The engine's introduction transformed Bentley almost overnight and will be remembered as a game changer.
Dr. Matthias Rabe, Member of the Board for R&D at Bentley Motors, added: "The W12 has propelled our cars and business forward at an exceptional speed and will go down as one of the most important innovations in our illustrious history."
Transition to Sustainable Powertrains
The new Ultra High Performance Hybrid powertrain will replace the W12. This advanced system combines a powerful V8 combustion engine with cutting-edge battery technology. It promises higher output than the W12 while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
This hybrid system will be available across all Bentley models, driving a new generation of dynamic and efficient supercars. The new powertrain underscores Bentley’s commitment to sustainable luxury mobility.
Records and Milestones
Despite not being designed for competition, the W12 has set several records. In 2007, Juha Kankkunen set a World Ice Speed Record in a Continental GT. In 2015, actor Idris Elba broke the UK Land Speed Record at Pendine Sands in a Continental GT Speed.
Rhys Millen also set records at Pikes Peak with both a Bentayga and a Continental GT Speed. These achievements highlight the W12's exceptional performance capabilities over its two-decade lifespan.
A Fitting Farewell
Bentley announced a limited run of 120 ‘Speed Edition 12’ models across its range to honour the W12's legacy. These special editions feature unique badging and commemorative items, celebrating the engine that defined an era for Bentley.
The W12 also played a crucial role in establishing 'coachbuilt by Mulliner' as a pinnacle of automotive luxury. Models like the Bacalar barchetta and Batur showcase this bespoke craftsmanship powered by the iconic W12 engine.
The legacy of the W12 engine is cemented by its continued service worldwide. Over its lifetime, it saw significant improvements in power and torque while reducing emissions by 25%. As Bentley transitions to electric vehicles, the impact of the W12 will remain influential.
