Ferrari To Power Future Hypercars With E-Fuels, CEO Confirms

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna has expressed that e-fuels are the future for combustion-engined supercars. The upcoming LaFerrari successor, codenamed F250, is anticipated to debut later this year and may utilise e-fuels. This new hypercar could incorporate the same technology planned for Ferrari's 2026 Formula 1 cars.

New Ferrari Hypercar to Feature Hybrid Powertrain

The successor to the LaFerrari is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain similar to those in the 296 GTB and SF90 models. However, its output will surpass the 296's 830hp and the SF90's 1,000hp. Although details about whether it will have a V6, V8, or V12 engine remain unclear, Vigna’s comments suggest it might run on e-fuels.

Vigna also mentioned that hydrogen powertrains could be an option for future Ferrari models. He stated that motorsport would be used to develop both e-fuel and hydrogen technologies.

"We are working with partners for 2026 for carbon-neutral fuel in Formula 1 [as part of new technical rules], and usually technologies start on the track and migrate to the road," he said.

Adoption of E-Fuels Accelerating

The adoption of e-fuels is happening faster than expected, according to Vigna. He believes that internal combustion engines (ICE) still have potential, supported by carbon-neutral fuel development. "ICE still has a lot to do," he noted earlier, highlighting that e-fuels could bolster Ferrari's carbon reduction strategy.

When asked about hydrogen technology, Vigna confirmed that Ferrari is exploring it but does not foresee its use before 2030. He added, "I believe that the racing space can always be the first place for adapting technologies." Hydrogen could be a viable option for future models.

Future Prospects for Sustainable Fuels

Vigna has previously suggested that sustainable fuels might allow combustion-engined cars to remain on sale post-2035. The European Commission has proposed permitting cars with combustion engines as long as they run solely on e-fuel. This aligns with Ferrari's strategy to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining performance.

Ferrari continues to innovate in sustainable technologies while preserving its legacy of high-performance vehicles. The brand’s commitment to developing both e-fuel and hydrogen powertrains signifies a balanced approach towards future mobility solutions.
