Ferrari F80 Revealed As 1,183bhp Successor To The LaFerrari

Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari has revealed its latest halo supercar, in the form of the F80. The all-new Ferrari F80 is the successor to the LaFerrari from 2013. Limited to 799 units, the F80 will take on McLaren's recently revealed W1.

Like the LaFerrari, the all-new F80 features a hybrid setup. However, unlike the LaFerrari, Enzo and the F50, the new F80 has ditched the big V12 for a twin-turbocharged V6 which is assisted by up to five electric motors for a combined system output of 1,183bhp.

The internal combustion unit is a familiar twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre 120-degree V6 engine that was first seen on Ferrari's 296 GTB roadcar. However, the F80's engine is a derivation of the race-spec engine used by its back-to-back Le Mans-winning 499P hypercar.

And while that race car's engine is kept in check by racing regulations, the F80's V6 is not. It redlines at 9,200rpm and features two electric motors that spool up the turbos instantly. So, the final power output from the Ferrari F80's V6 alone is 888bhp and 850Nm which is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission mounted on the rear axle.

There is another electric motor mounted to the underside of the engine which acts as a starter generator and helps with torque fill. There are two more electric motors on the front axle of the F80 which produce an additional 139bhp each, making the new Ferrari hypercar all-wheel-drive.

Thanks to that mental powerplant, the Ferrari F80 sprints from 0-100km/h in 2.15 seconds; hits 200km/h from a standstill in just 5.75 seconds and reaches a top speed of 350km/h. The F80 is the newest lap record holder at Ferrari's Fiorano test track with a time of 1min 15.3secs; 4.4 seconds quicker than the LaFerrari.

The new Ferrari F80 also gives us a look into the firm's design direction for its upcoming supercars in its ninth generation as a manufacturer and the results of its aero-focused looks will divide supercar fans who fell in love with the LaFerrari's mesmerizing looks.

The new Ferrari F80 looks both at the firm's past and its future. At the front, the black facia in the nose is a nod to the iconic Daytona and the recent 12Cilindri and it incorporates the sleek headlights into itself quite nicely.

The front bumper is full of aero trickery with large air intakes on either side of the large central air dam. The large and blocky front wheelarches are a nod to the iconic F40's rear section and help with the aerodynamics of the new F80.

Move further down the sides of the new Ferrari hypercar and you'll find butterfly doors behind which sit F1-inspired NACA ducts that shove air into the brutal V6 that sits low under the solid rear canopy with six louvres.

The rear section of the F80 is where quite a lot of the aero action happens. The large rear wing is not a fixed unit but moves around depending on the aero or braking needs while the massive diffuser stretches a record-breaking 1800mm under the F80 to help it cut through the air better. Finally, the Inconel exhaust exits high up in the centre, similar to the 296.

The Ferrari F80 features a staggered wheel setup with 20-inch rims at the front and 21-inch rims at the rear. These lightweight carbon-fibre wheels are draped in 285/30 R20 and 345/30 R21 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup 2 R tyres.

Inside, the Ferrari F80's cabin features a 1+1 seating configuration with the driver's seat sitting a bit ahead of the passenger chair. The driver's seat can be moved forwards or backward. There are multiple displays and a new steering wheel with actual physical buttons!

Thoughts About The Ferrari F80

Ferrari F80

The Ferrari F80 sees the birth of the latest Halo supercar from Maranello after the 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari. And while we would have loved to see it with a V12 engine, the F80 like its predecessors before it, makes use of the latest race tech used by the Prancing Horse marque on its race cars and gives us a glimpse at what the future of Ferrari will be as it enters its ninth decade as a carmaker.
