India's Electric Vehicle Revolution Accelerates With Extended FAME Scheme Support
A noteworthy initiative aimed at boosting EV sales is the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme. Under this scheme, subsidies are offered for EV purchasers, the initiative has made electric mobility more accessible and affordable than ever before.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the recent budget reveal, disclosed the additional funding allocated for the FAME project. Nonetheless, clarity regarding the scheme's extension or a potential FAME 3 remains elusive, leaving stakeholders tuned in for further updates.
Originally launched in 2015 under PM Modi's leadership, the FAME scheme has been instrumental in catalyzing electric mobility in India. The first phase saw an investment of Rs 895 crores, followed by the more substantial FAME 2, introduced in 2019 with a whopping Rs 10,000 crores allocation.
Initially set to conclude in 2022, the FAME 2's tenure was extended to March 2024, accommodating setbacks induced by the pandemic. The upsurge in budgetary allocation is anticipated to bolster the scheme's reach.
FAME 2 has already facilitated a paradigm shift, benefitting a myriad of users—7,000 e-buses, over 500,000 electric three-wheelers, 55,000 electric four-wheelers, and a legion of 1 million electric two-wheeler enthusiasts are a testament to its impact.
The amplification of EV beneficiaries is a trend set to escalate. The central government's zest in promoting electric vehicles is expected to endure, as hinted by the budget's pronounced endorsement of EV manufacturing and a burgeoning network of charging stations.
