New Documentary Showcases Electric Vehicle Adoption Success In San Joaquin Valley
Electrify America, in partnership with Valley Clean Air Now (Valley CAN) and Charge Across Town, has launched a 10-minute mini-documentary titled "Leading the Change, Electric Cars and Equity in the Central Valley." This film highlights the significant impact of their Ride and Drive events in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Funded by Electrify America, these events have notably changed public perceptions of electric vehicles (EVs) and increased their adoption rates.
The documentary, "Leading the Change, Electric Cars and Equity in the Central Valley," offers an in-depth look at the experiences of individuals who participated in these Ride and Drive events. The program aims to address air pollution and affordability barriers for vulnerable communities. From 2019 to 2024, it has helped over 3,000 residents transition to electric cars.
The San Joaquin Valley is one of America's most air-polluted and socially disadvantaged regions. With a population exceeding four million, it serves as an agricultural hub. The documentary chronicles efforts from 2019 to 2024 by Valley CAN and Charge Across Town to provide EVs for Equity Ride and Drives. These initiatives have resulted in more than 3,000 zero-emission vehicles now on the road.
Brenna Corrigan, Senior Manager of Brand Strategy at Electrify America, stated, "Our work in the San Joaquin Valley is very important to our mission to provide access to zero emission vehicles that are affordable and accessible to everyone." She added that ride-and-drive events are highly effective for increasing EV adoption.
Following test drives at these events, nearly 90% of attendees reported a positive impression of EVs. This marks a significant shift from their previously neutral stance. The percentage of attendees considering EV ownership also rose from 70% to 85% after participating in these events.
The eight counties within California's San Joaquin Valley have been targeted due to their high levels of air pollution and economic challenges. The "EVs for Equity" program specifically focuses on helping these communities transition to cleaner transportation options.

More than 4,000 test drives were conducted during these events, allowing participants firsthand experience with electric vehicles. This broad reach has been instrumental in shifting public perceptions and increasing interest in EV ownership.
