Understanding And Maintaining Your EV's Crucial 12-Volt Battery

Many electric car drivers are unaware that their EVs have a crucial 12-volt battery essential for various functions, according to leading breakdown provider Start Rescue. This smaller battery is often the main reason for EV breakdowns, rather than concerns about the main battery's range.

Start Rescue's research indicates that 23.7% of EV call-outs are due to the car not starting with the key, compared to 29.7% for petrol and diesel cars facing the same issue. "EVs are very reliable but, like all cars, it has a 12-volt battery that needs to be looked after," says Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue.

Maintain Your EV's 12-Volt Battery

The 12-volt system in an EV is vital for operating door locks, ignition, air conditioning, safety equipment, and crucial controls for the electric drivetrain. Alongside the high-voltage battery powering the motor, this smaller battery plays a significant role in ensuring the vehicle runs smoothly.

Maintaining this battery is straightforward. Start Rescue advises regular use of the EV as the best way to keep both batteries in good condition. Charging up the car regularly will also top up the 12-volt battery since it charges differently from an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.

Puffett suggests pre-conditioning the car’s cabin temperature while it's on charge and using a 'trickle' charger if you know the car will be parked for extended periods, such as during holidays. "Charging up the car regularly will top up the 12-volt battery as it charges differently to an ICE car," he adds.

Given its importance, Start Rescue recommends that EV drivers read their vehicle's manual to understand how to maintain this battery's charge properly. Consulting a dealer for advice can also be beneficial.
