Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Outsells Wagon R: Best Selling Model For The Automaker In 2024
Maruti Suzuki India has observed a notable shift in consumer preferences from January to November 2024. The Ertiga MPV has outsold the Wagon R by 483 units, marking a significant change in sales dynamics. This period saw Maruti dispatching 16,25,308 units, reflecting a slight 1% growth compared to the same timeframe in 2023 when they dispatched 16,02,890 units.
The Ertiga's success is evident with its sales reaching 1,74,035 units, a remarkable 49% increase year-on-year. In contrast, the Wagon R experienced a decline of 10%, selling only 1,73,552 units. The Ertiga's popularity surged during October's festive season with sales of 18,785 units. Its CNG variant played a crucial role in maintaining its lead over the Wagon R.

Utility Vehicles Gain Popularity
This trend highlights a growing consumer preference for utility vehicles over traditional passenger cars and sedans. Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicle sales have grown by 26% year-on-year and now account for 40% of their total passenger vehicle sales. This increase offsets the decline in hatchback and sedan sales, which dropped by 12%, now making up just 52% of total sales compared to last year's 60%.
From August to November, Ertiga's sales momentum helped close the gap with Wagon R. This shift aligns with broader market trends where consumers are increasingly favouring SUVs and MPVs over smaller cars. The decline in Wagon R's numbers underscores this transition towards more spacious and versatile vehicles.

Looking at the table, we can see that the top 3 models, which include the Ertiga, Wagon R, and Brezza, are only separated by a few thousand units. Also, the top 10 models have done extremely well, considering all models except Alto have clocked more than 1 lakh unit sales.
That being said, models such as Jimny, Ciaz, and Invicto seem to be struggling a lot in 2024. Moreover, an update to the Ciaz could significantly improve the model's sales in India, considering its rivals are able to generate much better sales figures.
