Elli Enters The Industrial Energy Storage Business With Volkswagen Group

The Volkswagen Group is expanding its energy services by entering the industrial energy storage market through its Elli brand. This new venture aims to develop, build, and operate large-scale stationary storage systems in collaboration with partners. The first projects, with capacities up to 350 MW and 700 MWh, are expected to launch in Germany by 2025.

Stationary large-scale storage systems are crucial for the future energy landscape. The demand for such solutions is projected to grow significantly across Europe, with Germany alone anticipating a 100-fold increase. Elli's projects will support both customer supply and electricity market arbitrage transactions, enhancing power grid stability and efficiency.

Elli Ventures into Industrial Energy Storage

Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group Board Member for Technology, highlighted the importance of sufficient storage solutions to meet rising demand and compensate for the variable feed-in of renewable energies. In 2023, Germany missed out on generating approximately 10,500 GWh from renewable sources due to inadequate storage options.

According to the Fraunhofer Institute, Germany will need over 100 GWh of battery storage systems by 2030 to manage renewable energy volatility. Elli's entry into industrial energy storage underscores its leading role in the mobility and energy transition.

High Financial Potential and Holistic Energy Provision

Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli, sees substantial financial potential in this business area. He envisions developing Elli into a comprehensive energy provider across Europe. The company's current product portfolio includes home chargers, flexible fast-charging stations, and smart green electricity tariffs.

Elli was founded in 2018 and operates from Berlin, Wolfsburg, and Munich. With around 370 employees, it offers a wide range of energy and charging solutions for both private customers and companies.

Volkswagen Group's Commitment to Sustainability

The Volkswagen Group is one of the world's leading car manufacturers, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. It operates globally with 114 production facilities across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. In 2023, the Group delivered 9.2 million vehicles worldwide and achieved sales revenue of EUR 322.3 billion.

The Group is committed to shaping the future of mobility through investments in electric and autonomous vehicles, digitalisation, and sustainability. This new venture with Elli aligns with Volkswagen's broader strategy to lead in sustainable energy solutions.
