Electrified DeLorean DMC-12 Set To Star At Salon Privé 2024

An electrified DeLorean DMC-12 will be a highlight at Salon Privé 2024, confirmed by Electrogenic, a renowned EV technology company. The event will take place at Blenheim Palace from 28-31 August. This year marks the 19th edition of what is known as the UK's most exclusive automotive garden party.

Electrogenic's custom 'plug and play' EV conversion kit transforms the iconic DeLorean DMC-12, giving it the performance its futuristic design always suggested. The electric conversion halves the car’s 0-60mph time, offering more than 150 miles of real-world electric motoring and compatibility with CCS rapid chargers for quick top-ups.

The DeLorean DMC-12, designed by John DeLorean in collaboration with Lotus and built in Belfast, debuted in mid-1981. Known for its dramatic wedge styling and gullwing doors, the car's standout feature was its stainless-steel bodywork. Remarkably, three-quarters of the over 9,000 units produced are still operational today.

The original DeLorean's Renault V6 engine was its weak point, producing only 130hp due to strict US emissions regulations. Electrogenic’s reversible conversion replaces this with an electric motor generating nearly 220hp. This motor drives a fixed-ratio gearbox powering the rear wheels and includes a 43kW battery pack located under the front luggage compartment and above the rear electric motor.

This transformation significantly boosts performance. The petrol-powered version took over 10 seconds to reach 60mph from rest; the Electrogenic DMC-12 achieves this in under five seconds. It also features launch control, instant torque, adjustable regenerative braking, and selectable drive profiles ranging from 'Eco' to 'Sport'.

Enhanced Features for Modern Use

The electrified DeLorean includes modern features like touchscreen Apple CarPlay and a bespoke virtual dashboard displaying drive modes, battery usage, and charge status. Enhanced air conditioning and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality allow owners to power devices or even charge another car while on the move.

Steve Drummond, CEO of Electrogenic, expressed excitement about showcasing the DeLorean at Salon Privé 2024. "Our engineering team has been blown away by the response it gets from the public; it generates interest and excitement like nothing else. You’re constantly being stopped by DeLorean fans asking for pictures or wanting to take a closer look at the car. It’s clear that the DMC-12 holds a special place in the hearts of many."

A Special Place in Automotive History

David Bagley, Director of Salon Privé, highlighted the significance of Electrogenic’s work on this iconic vehicle. "The world-famous DeLorean is always a huge draw, and this incredible development from Electrogenic creates arguably the finest DMC-12 ever. The engine was always its weakest link, so replacing it with a powerful, long-range electric drivetrain arguably turns it into the high-tech sci-fi car it should have been."

"That Electrogenic is a British firm based just up the road from Blenheim Palace in Kidlington, Oxfordshire makes its appearance at Salon Privé 2024 even more fitting. I can’t wait to see the reaction to this fantastic development, which our guests from the UK and internationally will find fascinating."

Supporting NSPCC Through Charity Partnership

Salon Privé proudly supports the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Donations from this event will help fund vital services aimed at protecting children from abuse and neglect across the UK and Channel Islands.

The electrified DeLorean DMC-12 exemplifies how classic cars can be revitalised with modern technology while maintaining their iconic status. Attendees at Salon Privé 2024 will have a unique opportunity to witness this blend of history and innovation up close.
