Dodge TSR Drivers Tony Stewart And Matt Hagan Experience Narrow First-Round Exits At NHRA Nevada Nationals
The NHRA Nevada Nationals in Las Vegas saw Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) drivers Tony Stewart and Matt Hagan face narrow first-round defeats. Competing in the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, both drivers experienced close losses. Stewart, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, drove his TSR Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Top Fuel dragster against Antron Brown. Despite a strong 3.735 run, Brown's 3.724 elapsed time edged out Stewart at the finish line.
Stewart qualified sixth with a 3.703 in the 16-car field and now looks forward to the season finale at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals from November 14-17 in Pomona, California. He remains ninth in the NHRA Top Fuel points standings during his rookie year in this category. "I felt this weekend started off strong for us," said Stewart, reflecting on his performance.
Matt Hagan, reigning NHRA Funny Car World Champion, aimed for another victory after winning in Texas last month. His TSR Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Hellcat faced an engine explosion during qualifying but was quickly repaired by his team. Hagan managed to secure the sixth starting position with a 3.854 run.
In eliminations, Hagan raced against Daniel Wilkerson but narrowly lost with a 3.901 to Wilkerson’s 3.880. Despite this setback, Hagan remains fourth in the NHRA Mission Funny Car points standings as he prepares for the final race of the season.
Sweden’s Ida Zetterström competed against Doug Kalitta in her first year of NHRA racing but faced tire smoke issues while Kalitta advanced to the finals. "Obviously, Doug Kalitta and his team, they’re the reigning champions for a reason," said Zetterström about her experience racing against tough competitors.
The upcoming In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals will feature qualifying rounds on November 15 and 16, with final eliminations on November 17 at Pomona Raceway. Fox Sports 1 will broadcast these events live on November 17 at 4 p.m. EST.
