CUPRA Formentor's Latest Production Innovations Unveiled At Martorell

At the Martorell plant, a new Matrix LED three-triangle eye signature has debuted on the assembly line. The paint shop now features exclusive shades of Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey Matt. CUPRA's design focus is evident as production of the new CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon begins, with distribution set for the third quarter of 2024.

The CUPRA Formentor, designed, developed, and manufactured in Martorell, has been a bestseller since its 2020 launch, with over 347,000 units sold. The revamped model is already iconic. The production process involves more than 4,000 employees and a new car rolls off the line every 69 seconds. This dynamic process ensures maximum quality through meticulous analysis and review.

CUPRA Formentor Innovations

Several innovative tools have been implemented in the production process at Martorell. Deep learning and advanced digital systems are part of this transformation. One such tool is the Prüfer Digital, an automatic station with an artificial vision system that checks over 60 control points simultaneously for mechanics and wiring.

The Smart Plug system also plays a crucial role in producing the CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon. This technology manages the assembly of more than 90 electronic control units remotely, starting up all control units for up to 45 cars at once.

The most significant innovation is the new KTL Oven, which is the first 100% electric transversal oven in the Volkswagen Group. It’s used in the paint-drying process to provide an anti-corrosion layer. This oven takes up 42% less space than conventional ovens and reduces energy consumption by up to 25%.

Martorell is Volkswagen Group’s third-largest plant in Europe by volume. Markus Haupt, CUPRA's Vice-President for Production and Logistics, stated, "we’re working to transform and enhance the factory, integrating the most advanced technologies in its manufacturing and structural processes."

CUPRA's Commitment to Electrification

The ongoing transformation of the Martorell plant includes a €3 billion investment aimed at making production more agile, sustainable, and profitable on the road to electrification. The CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon are among the first models to benefit from this investment.

CUPRA was launched in 2018 as an unconventional challenger brand combining emotion, electrification, and performance. By 2023, it had delivered over 230,000 vehicles globally. Each model launch has defined CUPRA’s character with unique designs like the CUPRA Ateca, Leon (its first plug-in hybrid), Formentor (the brand’s best-seller), and Born (its first fully electric vehicle).

CUPRA's Global Presence

CUPRA has a global network of specialised sales points and partnerships with FC Barcelona as its official automotive partner. It sponsors the World Padel Tour and eSports Club Finetwork KOI while participating in Formula E racing competitions.

The CUPRA Tribe includes ambassadors like Oscar-nominated director J.A. Bayona, Formula E driver Lucas Di Grassi, street artist TvBoy, Olympic gold medalists Adam Peaty and Saul Craviotto, German goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen, and footballer Alexia Putellas.
