2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Sets New Speed Record At 233 Mph With Mark Reuss Driving
The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has set a new benchmark as the fastest car ever produced by an American automaker. During a test in Germany, General Motors President Mark Reuss drove the Corvette ZR1 to a top speed of 233 mph. This achievement surpasses any current production car priced under $1 million. The record was established on the High-Speed Oval Track at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg.
"Setting the top-speed record in the Corvette ZR1 is a true triumph for Corvette and for Chevrolet, and also an exhilarating, surreal experience for me personally," said Reuss. "With the current generation’s switch to mid-engine, we knew the outstanding performance and balance made this a real possibility. To go over there and get it done is a testament to the power of ZR1, and to the incredibly talented team that developed and built it."
The Corvette ZR1 boasts the most powerful V8 engine ever created by an American car manufacturer. This model features a 5.5L twin-turbocharged LT7 DOHC flat-plane crank V8 engine, delivering 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 828 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm. It also includes a purposeful carbon fiber aero package that generates over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed.
Chevrolet engineers have developed Top Speed Mode specifically for closed course use. This mode optimises chassis control systems to achieve maximum speed. During testing, including Reuss's record-setting drive, an engineer was present in the passenger seat to analyse data in real-time.
The Corvette team achieved this two-way average speed on both northbound and southbound straightaways at Papenburg's High-Speed Oval Track. The conditions at Papenburg were ideal for high-speed testing due to optimal temperature and air density. Five engineers and both development cars exceeded 230 mph across multiple runs during these tests.
Corvette's shift to mid-engine architecture in 2020 unlocked new levels of performance and innovation. Chevrolet engineers utilised GM’s extensive expertise in software, modelling, and hardware development to establish this new speed milestone for American automakers.
Legacy of Speed: Previous Achievements
This isn't Chevrolet's first success at Papenburg; they have previously set top speeds with sixth and seventh generation Corvette ZR1s and the sixth generation Camaro ZL1 at this facility. The ZR1 is now officially GM’s fastest production vehicle ever made.
The record-setting ZR1 coupe used standard components such as its chassis and aero package along with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and aluminium wheels. It reached its peak speed with its engine redlining in sixth gear.
