CNG Cars Sales Soaring High In India – Registers A Staggering 53% Growth
The automotive landscape in India is witnessing a significant shift towards Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, with around 1.8 lakh units registered in the calendar year of 2023, according to the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
This surge reflects a 53% year-on-year volume growth, highlighting the growing preference for CNG over traditional vehicles, especially in the affordable segment and slightly above. The allure of better fuel efficiency, coupled with the environmental benefits, lower ownership costs, and the increasing availability of CNG stations, are driving this trend.

Automakers are responding to this shift by expanding their CNG offerings. Maruti Suzuki, a pioneer in this space, crossed the ten lakh sales milestone within its CNG lineup in March 2022, with Tata Motors introducing the industry-first Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) variants of the Tiago and Tigor CNG models.
The Tata Nexon iCNG concept, unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi, signals Tata Motors' intention to further compete in this growing market segment. There's also buzz around the potential introduction of a CNG variant for the upcoming Tata Curvv midsize SUV coupe.

Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota are not far behind in the race, offering popular models like the i10, Exter, Aura, Grand Vitara, and Urban Cruiser Hyryder with CNG variants. This surge in CNG vehicle registration and the expanding lineup of CNG models from major brands reflect a significant shift in consumer preference.
This shift in preference could be due to cost-effectiveness. The automotive industry is clearly taking note, with factory-fitted CNG cars becoming increasingly mainstream, offering attractive warranty periods and bridging the cost difference with retrofitments.
Thoughts About CNG Cars In India
This trend is not just about changing preferences but also about the automotive industry's adaptation to evolving consumer demands and the global shift towards more sustainable fuels. With the rising number of CNG vehicles, the future of transportation in the country is set to be cleaner, greener, and more economical.
