CNC Motorsport Unveils First Continuation Ford Sierra RS500 Group A Touring Car For Historic Racing

The first of three Ford Sierra RS500 Group A cars, built to period specifications and sanctioned by Andy Rouse, has been delivered to its new owner. CNC Motorsport is responsible for these builds, with the second car already underway and one final slot available. These cars come with full HTP papers, allowing participation in historic racing events.

Alan Strachan, who worked with Andy Rouse Engineering from 1989 to 1996, and his son Andrew have spent two years assembling the first car. Their work included other projects like restoring a Merkur XR4TI and building a Group A BMW 635CSI. The second car uses a new Motorsport-specification bodyshell acquired at the project's start, while a third shell has been sourced for the final car.

The Ford Sierra RS500 was introduced in July 1987, with only 500 units produced. It featured significant upgrades for Touring Car racing, such as a larger turbocharger and intercooler. Externally, it had an additional rear spoiler and front splitter. The fog lamps were removed to enhance brake cooling.

CNC Motorsport completed all fabrication on the bodyshells and machined parts like uprights and hubs in-house. They adhered strictly to Andy Rouse Engineering's original specifications. This included using a Getrag five-speed gearbox and period-style gauges. CNC Motorsport is the only certified producer of period ARE cages by Motorsport UK.

Located in The Cotswolds, CNC Motorsport is run by Alan and Andrew Strachan. They specialise in restoring and recreating historic touring cars from the 1970s and 80s. Using modern techniques like CNC machining and 3D printing, they bring these classic vehicles back to life while ensuring reliability and safety improvements.

The first car features a powerful 575bhp Cosworth YB engine built by Harvey Gibbs. It also includes a later model viscous differential. Alan Strachan stated, "This project has enabled us to build a reliable, period correct car that will be competitive in historic motorsport for the fraction of the cost of an original."

These continuation cars are designed for enthusiasts who want to race without risking valuable originals. Fans enjoy seeing these iconic RS500s perform at their limits across various European events.
