Citroen Basalt SUV Coupe Officially Revealed In India: Two Engine & Three Transmission Options

Citroen has officially unveiled the new Basalt SUV coupe in India, showcasing its production-ready version. The Basalt shares design elements with the C3 Aircross, featuring V-shaped split LED DRLs and a split grille.

However, it comes with unique touches like a tweaked bumper design. The side profile highlights a coupe roofline and dual-tone alloy wheels, distinct from the concept model's blacked-out wheels. At the rear, it sports wraparound LED tail lights, a blacked-out bumper, and a silver skid plate.

The new Citroen Basalt SUV-coupe is set to hit the market this month (August 2024) with an anticipated starting price of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). This will be Citroen's fifth product for the Indian market.

The interior of the Basalt mirrors that of the C3 Aircross, including a similar dashboard layout with dual digital displays and identical AC vent designs. It features white leatherette upholstery and a unique rear seat base that moves by 87 mm for enhanced under-thigh support.

The Basalt comes equipped with a 10.2-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital driver's display. Additional features include automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, push-button start/stop, and cruise control. Safety features comprise six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a rear parking camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Under the bonnet, the new Citroen Basalt will offer two petrol engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The base engine is expected to produce 82PS and 115Nm of torque. This engine comes exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

On the other hand, we expect the turbo petrol variants to be more popular with its 110PS of peak power and 205Nm of peak torque. Also, the turbo petrol engine can be specified with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Market Positioning and Competitors

The Citroen Basalt is expected to start at Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) and will compete directly with the upcoming Tata Curvv. It also presents itself as an attractive alternative to models like the Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Volkswagen Taigun, Citroen C3 Aircross, and Skoda Kushaq.
