Behind The Wheel: Experiencing The Chetan Shivram Rally School

Chetan Shivram, a renowned figure in the motorsport industry with a rich experience spanning over 25 years, has made significant strides in rallying and autocross. Not only this, he started his rally school back in 2007, giving him around 17 years of experience being an instructor.

His achievements include clinching the 2012 Indian National Autocross Championship (INAC), the 2019 INRC3 (Indian National Rally Championship), and the 2019 INRC. Moreover, Shivram leads his own motorsport team, Chetan Shivram Motorsports, and has established the world's first franchise-based 4-Wheeler autocross event, Clash of Motoclans.

Given the opportunity, we attended the Level 1 training at the Chetan Shivram Rally School in Bangalore, designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of rallying. The two-day program covered driving on dirt, basic navigation techniques, and essential emergency repairs, including swift tyre changes.

The first day of the program featured a track walk and timed driving sessions in a 1.6-litre Volkswagen Polo, equipped with a full rally setup by R.Tech Motorsports. These initial drives aimed at familiarizing students with the vehicle and track.

Personalized feedback from Chetan Shivram and additional runs with trainers Aditya Kousgi and Arvind Dheerendra sitting besides us further honed our skills. The day concluded with a thrilling ride alongside Shivram, showcasing his fun and smooth driving style.

Day two commenced with more driving runs, followed by an emergency repair challenge, where participants worked in pairs to change a tyre against the clock - teaching us how to work as a team.

The day also included a navigation class focusing on Rally Pacenotes. Students learned to create, read, and interpret these notes, ending in a reverse track drive with an instructor, Deeksha Balakrishna, saying our notes aloud while we went around the track.

The final timed run demonstrated students' progress, with notable improvements in confidence and understanding of the car and track. My performance improved by 11 seconds, setting the quickest time at 1min 11sec.

The Chetan Shivram Rally School offers three levels of training, catering to beginners, intermediate drivers with some event experience, and advanced drivers seeking to refine their skills. The school provides a comprehensive introduction to rallying, emphasizing car control, navigation, and the physical and mental demands of the sport.

This experience not only enhances driving skills but also offers valuable insights into the intricacies of rallying. For anyone aspiring to improve their driving prowess or gain a deeper understanding of motorsport, the Chetan Shivram Rally School is an excellent resource. '

With over 400 students passing out of his Rally School and one-third of the INRC grid being his drivers, it goes to show how determined Chetan Shivram is to grow the industry in India.
