Centenarian Driver To Share Road Safety Tips In Upcoming GEM Webinar
A forthcoming webinar from GEM Motoring Assist will feature a unique road trip with 102-year-old driver John Gill. John, from Ponteland in Northumberland, was filmed driving his Vauxhall Meriva along part of Hadrian’s Wall. He also shared insights into his nearly nine-decade-long, accident-free driving career during an interview.
"I'm a teetotaller to start with," John revealed in a recent interview with GEM. "I've always been a bit young for my age, even at school, and I seem to have the body of an 80-year-old, so I'm hoping that I can renew my licence at 103."

The Safer Driving Update webinar will be hosted by Valerie Singleton OBE and is scheduled for Tuesday 24 September 2024 at 2pm. The event is free to attend, and places can be booked online. This will be the third of four webinars offered in partnership with the Older Driver Forum in 2024.
Valerie Singleton OBE, who has had a long-standing relationship with GEM, will present the webinar. She continues to contribute regularly to GEM’s quarterly membership magazine, Good Motoring.
The webinar will cover various topics essential for older drivers. These include eyesight issues, new ‘black box’ pay-per-mile insurance options, developments in older driver assessments, and advice on discussing safety concerns with older drivers who may be unaware of their risks.
A special section will focus on the benefits of installing dashcams for road safety and how to share video evidence with the police. Contributors include Rob Heard from the Older Drivers Forum, Bryn Brooker from Nextbase Dashcams, Richard King from Ticker Insurance, and Nigel Lloyd Jones from the Gloucestershire Older Driver Forum.
Insights from John Gill
John Gill emphasised the importance of concentration while driving. "A safe journey comes from concentration, obviously. Mainly the question of observing traffic, not just the car in front but several cars ahead," he said. He noted that he tends to be more cautious than his children when driving.
GEM encourages senior drivers, their relatives, and anyone interested in driver safety to join this informative session. The event aims to provide valuable information that can help improve road safety for older drivers.
Additional Information
The webinar will also address practical tips such as checking your car before winter and how a dashcam can enhance safety and save lives. It aims to offer comprehensive guidance on maintaining safe driving practices among older drivers.
