20 Years Of The BMW PGA Championship: A Fusion Of Golf Excellence And Charitable Impact

The 2024 BMW PGA Championship, scheduled from 17 to 22 September at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, marks a notable milestone. This year, BMW celebrates two decades as the title partner of the DP World Tour’s flagship event. The tournament, which began in 1955 as the British PGA Championship, has evolved significantly since BMW took over in 2005.

Over the years, the championship has grown into a 'Festival of Golf,' featuring star-studded Pro-Am lineups, a Championship Village, and live concerts by renowned artists. This evolution underscores BMW's deep-rooted commitment to golf. The event also supports various charities, raising over £150,000 for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) since 2022.

In 2006, David Howell won the second BMW PGA Championship by five shots, becoming the first homegrown winner since Nick Faldo in 1989. That same year, the BMW 3 Series was named 'Car of the Year' at the What Car? Awards for its sharp driving dynamics and everyday practicality.

Two years later, Miguel Ángel Jiménez delivered an outstanding performance by acing the fifth hole and winning against Oliver Wilson on the second extra hole. Concurrently, BMW launched the X6 as the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé.

In 2010, Ernie Els oversaw a major redesign of Wentworth's West Course. Meanwhile, BMW introduced the fourth generation of its 5 Series Touring with advanced features like an eight-speed automatic transmission and Auto Start-Stop technology.

Luke Donald achieved remarkable success in both 2011 and 2012 by winning back-to-back championships and becoming world number one for the first time. During this period, BMW launched its fifth-generation M5 with increased power and reduced fuel consumption.

Young Talent and Global Stars

In 2013, Matteo Manassero became the youngest winner of the tournament at just 20 years old. That same year saw the debut of BMW's i3 model with an all-electric powertrain. Rory McIlroy’s dramatic win in 2014 came after overturning a seven-shot deficit to score a final round of 66.

The same year marked the launch of BMW's first plug-in hybrid sports car, the i8. It was honoured as Top Gear Magazine’s ‘Global Car of the Year’ and achieved significant success similar to McIlroy’s golfing feats.

Record-Breaking Performances

In 2015, Byeong-Hun An set a record with a score of 21-under-par to win as a European Tour rookie. The tournament also saw five aces recorded that year. Simultaneously, BMW unveiled its special edition M4 GTS as its fastest series-production road car ever.

Ross Fisher made headlines in 2019 with an albatross on the 18th hole using a 4-iron from 218 yards out. That year also saw BMW launch its largest production car to date, the X7 SUV.

Sustainability Initiatives

Billy Horschel became the first American winner since Arnold Palmer in 1975 during the 2021 championship. Around this time, BMW introduced its Vision Circular concept at Munich's IAA Motor Show. This design focuses on sustainability using fully recyclable materials envisioned for use by 2040.

The television production for last year's championship was powered entirely by green hydrogen—a world first for any sporting event. Additionally, BMW deployed its iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet internationally for trials and demonstrations.

A Look Ahead

The upcoming championship promises fierce competition and exciting events like another star-studded Pro-Am lineup and a Championship Village showcasing new models such as the third-generation M5 Touring making its UK premiere at Wentworth.

The success story continues with BMW Group's impressive global presence across more than 140 countries. In 2023 alone, they sold over 2.55 million passenger vehicles worldwide while maintaining their commitment to sustainability through efficient resource management strategies from production to product end-of-life phases.
