Celebrating 35 Years Of INFINITI's G Coupe: Insights From Master Driver Hiroyoshi Kato
To celebrate INFINITI's 35th anniversary, we revisit the G coupe, a luxury performance vehicle with a rich history. Master driver Hiroyoshi Kato, who joined Nissan Motor Corporation in 1976, played a significant role in shaping the driving experience of the INFINITI G35. His expertise and his team's input were crucial in creating an engaging drive for this model.
The G35 coupe was built on a platform influenced by Nissan's racing heritage, particularly from LeMans and Group C programs. This 'Front Midship' or 'FM' Platform placed the 3.5-liter V6 engine just behind the front axle. This design choice achieved a 52:48 front-to-rear weight distribution, enhancing handling and stability by slightly favouring the front tires.
Kato recalls that during development, INFINITI used the BMW 3 Series as a benchmark for the G35. They imported both U.S. and Japan-spec models to test at their Tochigi proving ground. The goal was not to mimic competitors but to create a unique driving feel with "nimble handling and explosive response," aiming for an exceptional experience for drivers.
As launch day neared, there was concern within the team about whether the steering might be too aggressive for luxury coupe buyers. However, these worries were dispelled once customer and media feedback came in positively.
The G35 Coupe was assembled at INFINITI's Tochigi plant in Japan. Nearby is Nissan's Tochigi proving ground, where Kato spent countless hours testing vehicles. During peak development, he drove approximately 3,250 km weekly on this track, which simulates various global terrains and conditions.
Kato often reached speeds up to 200 kph on the high-speed circuit while testing both the G35 and competitor models. This rigorous testing ensured that the G35 delivered an engaging driving experience.
Innovative Rear Active Steer System
Later in its lifecycle, the G35 introduced a rear active steer system that enhanced handling by adjusting rear suspension geometry based on steering input and speed. Kato noted that tuning this technology was complex due to less-advanced electronics available at that time.
The system used sensors and an electronic control unit to adjust rear geometry dynamically. Kato emphasized ensuring it felt natural and aided driver engagement without detracting from control.
A Legacy of Innovation
INFINITI celebrates its official 35th anniversary on November 8, 2024. Since its inception in 1989, INFINITI has consistently challenged automotive luxury norms with values centred around being Human, Daring, and Forward-thinking.
This legacy continues as INFINITI embarks on a product renaissance with new models like the QX80. The brand remains committed to innovation while honouring its daring beginnings through continuous evolution.
