Celebrating 35 Years Of INFINITI FX: Insights Into Its Design And Legacy

In honour of INFINITI's 35th anniversary, we revisit the FX model, a pioneer in the coupe-crossover segment. Launched in North America in early 2003, the FX was known for its bold design, excellent performance, and luxurious comfort. This model blended these elements into a unique package.

Lead designer Hideo Komuro aimed to create a 'cool fusion' with the FX. The design combined the robust lower body of an SUV with the sleek upper body of a sports coupe. This blend resulted in a distinctive vehicle profile.

The FX's window line, called the "Dynamic Arch," resembles a traditional Japanese bow. This design gives the vehicle a sense of movement even when it's not moving. Komuro's vision was to capture this dynamic essence in the car's appearance.

The roofline of the FX drew inspiration from architecture. Komuro was inspired by a wire-framed pavilion he saw, which influenced the dynamic yet spacious look of the car's upper body. The tension in the wire frame created both space and visual appeal.

Komuro also found inspiration in Shiro Kuramata's work, a renowned Japanese designer. Kuramata’s ability to transform simple designs with one focal element influenced Komuro’s approach to the FX’s exterior.

The rear hatch of the FX features a subtle design inspired by Japanese culture. The dip in the lower rear window glass reflects elements of a Japanese kimono. This design choice not only added aesthetic value but also improved rear visibility.

INFINITI continues to share insights from its early product range, including details from the development of other models like the G coupe.

INFINITI Motor Company is based in Yokohama, Japan, with operations worldwide. Their premium vehicles are manufactured in Japan, North America, and China. Design studios are located in Atsugi-Shi near Yokohama, London, San Diego, and Shanghai.
