Caterham And Royal Air Force Craft Unique Tribute To Esteemed Puma HC2 Helicopter
A unique Caterham Seven 360R has been crafted using parts from a Puma HC2 helicopter. This collaboration between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Caterham aims to support Mission Motorsport and the RAF Benevolent Fund. The car will be auctioned via Collecting Cars to raise funds for injured servicemen and women.
The car will debut at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix this weekend. The unveiling is scheduled for 10:00 am GMT at the Military Village on Friday, 5 July 2024. The project hopes to generate over £100,000 through the auction.
This initiative supports the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) division, offering participants opportunities to enhance their skills. The project involved teams from RAF Benson and Caterham, who decided to pay tribute to the Puma helicopter and its servicemen upon its decommissioning.
The car's exterior retains its original finish from the aircraft, with additional panels painted in 'NATO Green'. The chassis mirrors the aircraft's 'Desert Sand' finish. Aluminium skin from the helicopter's tail boom and doors have been repurposed for the car's exterior panels.
Inside, quilted soundproofing from the helicopter lines the door panels and tunnel top, forming padding for carbon fibre seats. The evacuation instructions are stitched into the lining. A satin black dashboard replaces regular switches with military-grade switchgear, featuring a three-stage ignition sequence for starting.
The assembly was a joint effort between Caterham and RAF Benson personnel. Corporal McCreadie expressed pride in participating, stating: "It has been an honour to be a part of the Caterham project... I am proud to have been a part of the team that made this car."
Public Display and Auction
The car will be displayed at various events throughout summer before bidding opens on 15 August, ending on 12 September via Collecting Cars. Squadron Leader Morley highlighted that this project showcases engineering skills within both military and industry sectors.
Puma HC2 helicopters serve multiple combat roles, including troop movement and casualty extraction. They also participate in humanitarian missions. Bob Laishley, CEO of Caterham, noted: "When the RAF approached us about this project we jumped at the chance... it’s great to know that any proceeds from the auction will go to incredibly important causes."
