New research shows that 60% of Brits are looking for alternatives to traditional camping, with home comforts being a significant factor. Despite this, over half (52%) still want to enjoy the outdoors, especially after lockdowns. The Korean car camping trend, Chabak, offers a cost-effective and spacious alternative.
Chabak involves camping in and around your car, providing comfort and convenience. This trend caters to modern holidaymakers who seek home comforts while enjoying the outdoors. It allows for flexible travel plans, with easy setup and the ability to change destinations spontaneously.
The research by Hyundai revealed that 51% of Brits are increasingly interested in road trips, with 46% planning more outdoor adventures post-COVID-19. Modern adventurers now prioritise amenities like WiFi (82%), toilets and showers (51%), and creature comforts such as cushions and kettles (37%).
The all-new Hyundai Santa Fe epitomises this shift towards car camping. Designed during lockdown, it aims to combine home comforts with nature escapes. Eduardo Ramírez, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Center Europe, stated, "The inspiration for the Santa Fe was to create a vehicle that's not just transport but a gateway to adventure—a private retreat on wheels."
Car camping spots across the UK can now be enjoyed with modern SUVs like the Santa Fe. These vehicles offer spacious interiors and innovative features ideal for Chabak experiences. Holidaymakers can explore without compromising on comfort, with features like collapsible seats providing a level sleeping surface.
Korean Influence in the UK
Chabak is part of the "Korean wave" sweeping the UK, which includes K-pop, Korean skincare routines, and food. This trend has changed how Koreans enjoy the outdoors and drive, with 70% of new car sales in South Korea being SUVs in 2022.
