BYD Achieves Record Deliveries With Over 400,000 Vehicles In September 2024

Chinese automaker BYD Co. achieved a milestone in September by delivering over 400,000 vehicles for the first time in a single month. This marks a 46% increase compared to the same month last year. The company's total vehicle sales for the year have reached 2.75 million units, indicating strong growth both domestically and internationally.

Passenger vehicle sales for BYD in September amounted to 417,603 units. This includes 164,956 battery electric cars and 252,647 plug-in hybrid models. Of these deliveries, more than 33,000 units were sold overseas, highlighting BYD's expanding global presence.

Government Incentives Boost Sales

The Chinese government has introduced a rebate of 20,000 yuan ($2,900) for certain electric and hybrid vehicles traded in. This incentive is expected to further boost sales in the sector. Additionally, Beijing has rolled out economic stimulus measures aimed at increasing disposable income, which may benefit BYD as it remains China's top-selling car brand.

BYD's management initially raised its annual sales target for 2024 from 3.6 million units but later denied this adjustment. Despite this confusion, the company remains on track to meet its ambitious goals with three months left in the year.

Competitive Landscape

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. reported September sales of 201,949 units, up from 166,955 units last year. Their year-to-date sales have increased by 32%, reaching 1.49 million units. However, smaller automakers are feeling the pressure from these larger companies' successes.

Great Wall Motor Co.'s sales figures for September were less promising at 108,398 units, including 30,129 new energy vehicles. This represents an 11% decrease compared to the previous year.

With significant events like China's Golden Week and the upcoming Christmas season still ahead, BYD is poised for a strong finish to the year. The company is close to achieving its annual target of selling four million vehicles by leveraging domestic demand and international expansion strategies effectively.

BYD's recent performance underscores its dominance in the Chinese automotive market and its growing influence abroad. As government incentives continue to support electric vehicle adoption, BYD is well-positioned to maintain its leadership role in this rapidly evolving industry.
