BYD Seal EV To Electrify The Indian Market With March 5 Launch

As the automotive landscape shifts towards electric vehicles (EVs), BYD is poised to introduce its third product in the Indian market, the Seal EV, on March 5. This announcement comes after the vehicle's debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in India.

The Seal EV, set to arrive as a fully imported model, has already sparked interest among potential buyers, with dealers beginning to accept unofficial bookings. With an expected price tag of around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Seal EV is gearing up to make a significant impact in the EV segment.

BYD Seal: A Peek into the Future

The India-spec BYD Seal will be available with an 82.5kWh battery pack, featuring rear-wheel drive and touting a substantial 570km range under the WLTP cycle. The vehicle's power comes from a permanent magnet synchronous motor located on the rear axle, delivering 230hp and 360Nm of torque. Notably, the Seal EV can accelerate from 0-100kph in just 5.9 seconds.

This model, weighing in at 2,055kg, incorporates BYD's patented blade battery technology, facilitating rapid charging speeds of up to 150kW. This technology enables the battery to charge from 10-80 percent in merely 37 minutes using a fast charger, while a conventional 11kW AC charger fully charges the battery in 8.6 hours.

There's also buzz about a potential dual-motor AWD variant offering 530hp and a 520km range, though details remain under wraps. The Seal's design, influenced by the Ocean X concept from 2021, embodies BYD's "ocean aesthetics" design philosophy.

Exterior highlights include a coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, and distinctive four boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. The vehicle's rear is adorned with a full-width LED light bar, creating an imposing presence.

Innovative Interiors and Expected Competition

Inside, the Seal EV boasts a rotating, 15.6-inch infotainment system centrally located, complemented by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a heads-up display for the driver. The floating touchscreen, surrounded by central AC vents, includes a drive selector and a scroll wheel for drive mode selection.

Additional features such as heated windscreen control, audio system volume control, and dual wireless charging pads underscore the vehicle's modernity.

DriveSpark Thinks

With its anticipated price point, the BYD Seal EV is set to rival the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The Ioniq 5 presents a close match in specs, featuring a RWD motor with 217hp and a 72.6kWh battery pack, boasting a 630km range. This competitive landscape highlights the growing options available to electric vehicle enthusiasts in India, marking an exciting era in automotive innovation.
