BYD Collaborates With Huawei For Next-Gen Autonomous Electric Vehicles
BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has partnered with Huawei to integrate their advanced autonomous driving system into its Fangchengbao EVs. The Bao 8 SUV will be the first model to feature Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system and is expected to hit the market later this year.
Huawei's Growing Influence in the EV Sector
This collaboration underscores Huawei's expanding role in the electric vehicle industry as a significant supplier of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Notably, Volkswagen's Audi will also incorporate Huawei's ADAS in its EVs for the Chinese market.

BYD has been a dominant player in the EV market, largely due to its vertical integration strategy. This approach allows BYD to produce key components like batteries internally, giving it a substantial cost advantage over competitors.
BYD's Strategic Move Towards Premium Brands
The partnership with Huawei aligns with BYD's strategy to upscale its offerings and boost sales of its premium brands—Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang. These brands accounted for only five per cent of BYD's total sales in the first half of the year, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Despite its dominance, BYD faces pressure to enhance its smart driving capabilities. The company has been investing heavily in developing its own advanced driver-assistance systems by hiring thousands of engineers since last year. However, it still relies on external suppliers for intelligent features in its high-end models.
Investment in Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems
BYD continues to invest significantly in developing its own ADAS technology. This investment includes hiring thousands of engineers since last year. Nevertheless, for upmarket models like Denza cars, BYD still depends on external suppliers such as Momenta for these advanced features.
The use of Huawei technology highlights BYD's efforts to catch up with rivals in enhancing smart driving configurations through both internal development and strategic partnerships.
The collaboration aims to elevate BYD’s off-road SUV lineup by incorporating cutting-edge autonomous driving technology from Huawei. This move is part of a broader effort by BYD to improve profitability through increased sales of its premium brands.

The Bao 8 SUV under the Fangchengbao lineup will be the first model equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun intelligent driving system. This model is set to go on sale later this year, marking a significant milestone in BYD’s journey towards integrating advanced autonomous driving technologies into its vehicles.
This partnership between two major Chinese companies signifies a step forward in the evolution of smart driving technologies within the electric vehicle sector. It reflects both companies' commitment to innovation and their strategic vision for future mobility solutions.
