Businesses Offered Chance To Participate In Innovative V2G EV Charging Trial

Companies are invited to join a trial of advanced vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric vehicle (EV) workplace charging technology. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs. Participants will receive a free V2G EV charger, which they can keep after the project concludes.

V2G technology allows EVs to charge when electricity is cheaper and then return energy to the grid or other vehicles when costs are higher. This trial, part of the V2X Innovation Programme, is led by Hangar 19 in collaboration with DriveElectric and CrowdCharge.

DriveElectric has been aiding organisations and individuals in adopting EVs since 2008. CrowdCharge uses AI-powered tools to optimise V2X services, helping businesses manage usage and save money and carbon. Other partners include Grid Beyond, Oxfordshire County Council, Electric Corby, and JLR.

To participate, businesses must have at least two electric vehicles from brands like Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, or MG that feature vehicle-to-load technology. Participants will be provided with a free 7kW AC bidirectional charger worth over £5,750 but must pay for installation and ongoing software use post-trial.

This trial is one of the first in the UK to use AC charging with the latest generation of EVs featuring ‘vehicle to load’ technology. Previous trials primarily used Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles with CHAdeMO DC charging technology.

Sustainability Leadership

The V2VNY project seeks businesses eager to demonstrate sustainability leadership by testing and refining V2G technology. Mike Potter, CEO of CrowdCharge and DriveElectric, highlighted the potential: "The UK has a huge and largely untapped battery storage capability in the form of over one million electric vehicles that spend most of their time parked up. Using this resource can help reduce the load on electricity networks at peak times, as well as lowering costs and carbon."

The project will explore how these batteries can improve energy usage patterns, aiming to cut emissions and save on energy costs. JLR will provide prototype electric vehicles for the trial.

Project Timeline

The recruitment for the V2VNY trial has begun, with the project starting in September 2024 and running until March 2025. Most chargers have been allocated, but a few remain available for forward-thinking companies that apply quickly.

This initiative is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) through Innovate-UK as part of the £65m Flexibility Innovation Programme from the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

About DriveElectric

DriveElectric has been pioneering electric vehicle adoption for over 15 years. Their mission is to promote green energy on roads to achieve Net Zero emissions swiftly. They offer tailored support to help businesses transition to carbon neutrality.

DriveElectric's collaboration with CrowdCharge has led to the development of EV HUB Charge+, an advanced charging solution designed to meet drivers' specific needs. This innovation supports a greener future by enabling efficient EV charging.

The V2VNY Phase 2 project aims to demonstrate how bidirectional charging can send energy from a vehicle’s battery back into the grid or other vehicles. This approach helps trade energy efficiently while reducing carbon emissions.
