Legacy Of Bugatti Type 35 Shapes The Future With Tourbillon Hyper Sports Car

The Type 35, conceived by Ettore Bugatti, epitomised advanced technology, exceptional driving dynamics, and timeless design. This legendary race car continues to inspire Bugatti's modern creations, including the new Tourbillon hyper sports car. Ettore Bugatti's artistic background influenced his insistence on aesthetics, yet his engineering prowess ensured that form followed function. This principle made his cars unique and incomparable.

Debuting in 1924, the Type 35 showcased Ettore’s meticulous attention to detail. Its streamlined eight-cylinder design was partly due to aerodynamic needs. The car's creator paid close attention to every aspect, making it stand out. "The mindset of Ettore Bugatti can be seen in every element of the Type 35," said Frank Heyl, Bugatti Director of Design. He added that these values remain integral to contemporary Bugatti models like the Tourbillon.

The hollow front axle of the Type 35 was not only lightweight but also had a lustrous finish matching the iconic horseshoe radiator cowl. The metal dashboard was enhanced through an "engine turn" process, improving both appearance and durability. Even components under the bonnet were designed for both performance and aesthetics, such as the beautifully shaped exhaust manifolds.

The Type 35’s legacy is evident in modern Bugatti models. The ‘Type 35 100 Anniversaire’ motifs on the Bugatti Bolide’s front fenders celebrate this heritage. Finished in "Bleu de Lyon," similar to its predecessor, it made a notable appearance at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The perfect proportions of the fuselage-shaped body inspired models like the Veyron and Chiron.

Bugatti's latest model retains design elements from its predecessors while evolving them. The horseshoe grille is instantly recognisable and maintains design purity from which all lines and volumes originate. Subtle influences like the sophisticated linkage controlling the front brakes provide a mechanical connection between car and driver, a principle echoed in the intricate engine start lever of the Tourbillon.

Innovations in Modern Engineering

Hidden beneath its carbon fibre exterior, the Tourbillon features cutting-edge innovations such as 3D-printed aluminium suspension arms and uprights. These reduce weight by 45%, mirroring Ettore Bugatti’s breakthroughs with aluminium wheels and hollow axles on the Type 35. Frank Heyl noted that even without exterior panels, customers recognise a Bugatti due to its inherent aesthetic.

"When a customer comes to the Molsheim Atelier and sees their car being built... they immediately recognise it as a Bugatti because every part has been designed to look beautiful," Heyl explained. He emphasised that for something to be timeless, it must be authentic and purpose-driven, reflecting Ettore Bugatti’s philosophy of combining technical beauty with advanced technology.

Every vehicle crafted in Molsheim is designed to last for centuries, continuing Ettore Bugatti’s legacy of creating enduring automotive icons. The new Tourbillon embodies this tradition, ensuring that each car tells its own story through its design and engineering excellence.

This commitment to innovation and heritage ensures that Bugatti remains at the forefront of automotive excellence while honouring its storied past.
