Bugatti Tourbillon's Design Philosophy: Marrying Speed With Timeless Elegance

The second episode of Bugatti's 'A New Era' docuseries, featuring Director of Design Frank Heyl, delves into the design philosophy behind the Bugatti Tourbillon. Premiering on YouTube on July 25th, this instalment highlights the intricate process of creating a new chapter in Bugatti's storied history.

Frank Heyl explains that Bugatti's design is deeply rooted in its 115-year legacy. "With over 115 years of Bugatti history, there is a rich legacy of design DNA that we can reference to; we have a guiding line emphasizing what defines a Bugatti," he states. This heritage influences every aspect of their modern designs.

The Tourbillon exemplifies this philosophy by prioritising performance in its form. "Form always follows performance," Heyl notes. Each curve and panel is meticulously crafted to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and overall speed.

Aerodynamics play a crucial role in the Tourbillon's design. Every element, from intakes to exhausts, is designed for optimal performance. Whether aiming for top speed or high downforce like the Bugatti Bolide, each decision serves a performance purpose.

This attention to detail allows the Tourbillon to achieve speeds exceeding 400 km/h. However, speed is only part of the story; timelessness is equally important in Bugatti's design ethos.

Timeless Elegance

"Bugatti is about the interplay between elegance and speed," says Heyl. The challenge lies in keeping these cars relevant over time. "What dates a car is the technology of the time it was created in; 100 years from now, today’s technology won’t be cutting-edge anymore. Instead, we need to focus on preciousness."

The Tourbillon's design reflects this timeless quality, drawing inspiration from watchmaking. The cabin offers an analogue experience reminiscent of century-old timepieces still valued today.

The Driving Experience

For Heyl and his team, the driving experience is paramount. "The experience – that is what we tailor-made the Tourbillon to evoke," he explains. From the feel of aluminium switchgear to the sound of a naturally aspirated V16 engine, every detail aims to create an emotional connection with the driver.

"It sounds really emotional," Heyl adds. The radical execution of this concept sets it apart from previous models, making driving a Bugatti an unparalleled experience.
