International Bugatti Meeting 2024 In Sicily: A Journey Through Automotive Glory And Cultural Riches
The Mediterranean's largest island, Sicily, holds a special place in Bugatti's history. From 1925 to 1929, the Bugatti Type 35 dominated the 540-kilometer Targa Florio race held on the island. This record of five consecutive victories remained unbroken until the last race on Sicily's closed public roads in 1977. Even today, in the centenary year of the Type 35, Sicily continues to be celebrated by the Bugatti community. This year, from May 19 to 25, the International Bugatti Meeting took place on this historically significant Italian island.
Covering over 1,000 kilometers in just a few days, a line-up of 66 cars – ranging from Type 13s to Type 57s – retraced the routes of their predecessors. These meticulously planned routes included drives through historical towns such as Noto and Marzamemi. Ettore Bugatti’s masterpieces explored the island’s baroque architecture and ancient fishing villages.
One of the tour's highlights was a trip around Mount Etna. Participants experienced the vast Sicilian landscape surrounding the imposing volcano. Navigating winding roads through chestnut forests, vineyards, and lava flows, the cavalcade of Grand Prix racers and vintage Bugatti sports cars paused for a coffee break at a traditional restaurant on Etna’s slopes. Here, local delicacies were enjoyed against breathtaking views.
Sicilian Heritage
The Val di Noto, located in central Sicily, is renowned for its Baroque architecture. The imposing churches, sumptuous palaces, and charming squares are a celebration of human creativity and timeless beauty. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, this area enveloped attendees in a timeless atmosphere. After continuing to Marzamemi for lunch by the sea, the convoy returned to their hotel for an evening program: an open theater night in Syracuse. Participants witnessed a classic Greek tragedy in the ancient Greek Theatre, showcasing Sicily’s Hellenic roots and cultural importance spanning over 2,000 years.
Wine Tradition
Sicily is also famed for its outstanding wines. On day four, participants toured picturesque vineyards before stopping for lunch at a local winery. This experience highlighted another aspect of Sicily’s rich heritage.
Legendary Craftsmanship
The final day took the group through the picturesque Sicilian hinterland. Participants were inspired by masterful local craftsmanship during stopovers. For Bugatti enthusiasts who appreciate attention-to-detail and handwork – hallmarks of the brand – it was a reminder of skilled craftsmanship's timelessness.
Throughout their 1,000-kilometer journey, International Bugatti Meeting guests experienced Sicily's blend of beauty, culture, and history that first set it apart from other road rallies. With historically significant Type 35s and other important Bugatti models back on Sicilian soil, the event offered an unforgettable flashback to the 1920s and that unique Type 35 Targa Florio supremacy.
