More Than Two-Thirds Of UK Van Drivers Believe Electric Vans Are More Cost Effective Than Petrol Or Diesel Alternatives
British van drivers are increasingly recognising the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs), with a recent study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK revealing that 52% of commercial drivers believe EVs are more cost-effective than petrol or diesel alternatives. The survey, conducted in December 2023, highlights a growing trend towards sustainable mobility solutions.
According to the study, more than two-thirds (67%) of UK van drivers think an EV would suit their business needs. This shift is partly driven by the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London, with nearly one-third (29%) of respondents citing it as a reason for considering the switch to electric vans.

Despite the growing interest in EVs, some barriers to adoption remain. Charging time is the primary concern for 57% of van drivers. However, almost three-quarters of respondents no longer view reliability as an issue when considering an electric vehicle.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo, delivered with a net carbon-neutral balance, offers modern mobility for various trades. Businesses can benefit from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Spring Sales Offer until 1 August 2024, with prices starting at £379 per month on a three-year Business Contract Hire deal.
The ULEZ scrappage scheme provides financial assistance of up to £9,500 to eligible enterprises in London to replace their internal combustion engine vans with fully-electric models. This initiative supports businesses in their transition to sustainable mobility solutions.
Craig Cavanagh, National Fleet Manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented on the findings: "UK businesses are seriously considering when and how to make the switch to EVs. Van drivers are recognising the benefits from both sustainability and cost-effectiveness perspectives, especially those in or around London due to the ULEZ expansion and scrappage scheme fund."
Cavanagh added that the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo is designed to meet these needs, offering a modern mobility solution that aligns with the growing trend towards sustainability.
